They gave us independence but we lack freedom.

Man can never be satisfied, as long as man exists, then greed also exits.
Once a year, countries of African origin who were colonized by the various colonial masters, celebrate what is called independence day. The truth is no matter how many times we celebrate that independence, if we do not show we have freedom, then we are still as good as being slaves.

Africa is a continent filled with so many natural resources, talent and diversities, but the sad part is that we constantly seek the approval of our colonial masters before we act.
We hand over the real mantle of leadership to the foreign powers and allow them pull the strings from the shadows, while puppets and figure heads are allowed to show their faces believing they are rulers.

True democracy died before it even begun in Africa. We see African leaders campaigning outside the shores of their countries for support for an election in their homeland. What ever happened to charity begins at home?
We shout about being technologically backwards when the money for science research is being funneled into election bribes.

Speaking of bribes, credibility is not an option anymore as you are only considered credible when you have a fat pocket. The African mind has been blinded to the reality of humanism but rather, it is open to the theory of god fatherism. You are a nobody unless your colonial masters approve of your person. We shout we demand respect and equality from those who colonized us, but at the slightest opportunity, we run to them for meaningless aides.

We say Africa will be great and then we mock the greatness. We want a world class lifestyle, yet we prefer to be dependents and consumers rather than producers. We cry for recognition but have we really earned the right at the big boys table? To get to world class standard, you not only have to talk the talk, you have to walk the walk.

Heroes who laid down their lives for the vision of a better Africa have seen their vision truncated by pot bellied, portfolio deficiency cretins who only think about houses abroad and their Swiss bank accounts.
Whenever some African leaders in some countries vacate power, it is usually done violently or after being removed from office, the whole world discovers the woeful tales of their embezzlement. Yet we hope for a better Africa.

We see young men contesting elections in other continents, but in Africa, old age seems to be the trademark for eligibility. You see old men who should be enjoying their retirement or giving the wisdom they have to offer (if at all they have any)to the younger generation fighting for the mantle of power and then cluelessness continues. The youths are left out and instead of doing something about it, they rather chase women in the days of their youth and come back to contest in their old age thereby repeating the nauseating cycle.

When you see a young leader in Africa, check well, the person might have overthrown the government of the day through a coup and be sure that they will hold on to the reigns of power till they grow old.
Until Africa decides to stop deceiving itself and allows the growth to occur from within, we'll forever remain independent slaves.

This was intelligently written dear, at times I wonder if we are truly free when we have to constantly seek approval to even develop ourselves. That is so sad, especially when our best and brightest minds now feel they have to go overseas before they can achieve anything.

I don't know what to say... You've finished all the talk in this wonderful article. Really my African wounded... Suffer.. Scream you wish to taste the true taste of freedom without restriction... No external directives
Without corruption or bribes or injustice
We want to scream and tell the world we the guys are here
We deserve a chance.
We want goodness for our country and our beautiful African

With a post like this, i think you should join the youthtakeover campagn, you will do well im politics..

I hope to be a part of the change.

You have successfully summarized Africa's woes with this write up. Sadly, the story of Africa have not been like the so called fairy tale where we are supposed to live happily ever after independence. Our leaders have failed in subjecting themselves as slaves rather they have achieved success in making the masses beg for bread.. The labor of our heroes past is gradually crumbling. Its so dissapointing to tell.
I Sincerely enjoyed reading your post. Its actually topnotch and i long for more of this flare.. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for reading

One thing i have learnt in this post is "never procrastinate"... wait wait wait... don't be too fast to say i didn't read through. Yes i did but funny enough, i have an unfinished article titled FREE BUT NOT FREED; THE BONDAGE IN OUR FREEDOM. I'd still drop it soon nonetheless.

This is an overview of my opinion on modern slavery. How the minds our Nigerian leaders and Africans at large, have been so enslaved, we seek approval of action before we act. How we prefer to wear the italian made wears because we think aba boys will sell fake wears to us.

We seek to be like the English man and that's why to attend a wedding in Africa, Bill Gates wore his well ironed suit but let an African attend a white man's wedding in the white man's land, Nd you would see that Agada wouldn't be in sight nor any cultural attire because he feels they'd stare at him as ancient and uncivilized but this is our culture.

But like they say, charity begins at home. How that a woman on lekki phase 1 in Lagos gives birth to her children and teaches them how to eat eba and egusi with cutleries... ahn ahnnn ... what then has happened to washing your hands and eating wth them, teaching them how to mould it into a piece and swallow... Well, oyinbo lifestyle sure pass...

The issue of corruption due to the oyinbo man's policies he left behind? Story for another day ...

My dear, i call this the bondage in our freedom. We are free but our minds are still enslaved and this is why i have written my comment in English because if i write in pidgin, or my language, I'd be seen as uncivilized or barbaric.

This is a nice piece. Enjoy your night.

We are free but our minds are still enslaved and this is why i have not written my comment in English because if i write in pidgin, or my language, I'd be seen as uncivilized or barbaric.

this was an epic response, but na pidgin sure pass for response. Language na for talk, im no matter wetin you yarn, just yarn wetin dey your mind. If anybody talk jagbajantis, tear am slap. If we miss road, na because say we wan miss road o, because if we say oda people miss road that's why we miss road, no be excuse be that.

Am proudly African and that's the koko...moreso I be free thinking African. I spoke with pidgin to show that I don't care if anyone thinks am barbaric or not.I don't owe them anything...Have a great night.

Indeed.no truer words than these. If only we are patient enough to find ourselves and revel in our originality as Africans, create our identity and bask in the glory therein.

I agree with you, i remember the words of lord lugard in one of his books, he said, God has given africans natural resource, and has given the european the mandate to rule over africans. This seem to be true with how we african has allow them rule over us even after independence

They used the hamatic hypothesis to justify this. And this was how they subdued the Africans with this religious reform.

They claimed that Jacob cursed the descendants of Ham to be hewers of wood and fetchers of water after Ham had seen his father's (Jacob) nakedness and called his brothers to laugh. They claimed that Ham and his descendants fled towards Africa and to some part of America... but how true is this?

They came to us with the Bible and the Plough.

And their claims were highly biased. Now this is what we have to face.

Never put the fire of hope go down at you @ehiboss. Lit it up. Your current struggle for achieving freedom is not worth comparing to the bright future that your nation will have if you unceasingly fight for it. You will reap what you have sown.

We are still under the herald of our colonia masters.. They gave us their education just for communication(read and write). They enslaved us until God knows when.

Awareness is the first step to change. I think every country has citizens that fail to express and experience the freedom they have. They fall in line with the group think and way of being. Very few think for themselves and act on those thoughts.

They claim we are free but we are still cooperate slaves. No longer tied with chain but we no have suit and tie. Independence is not enough when we are still dependent on everything they have.
Not until our mind is free then we are not really independent.
