Well.. I first stumbled upon this concept watching a TV show sometime ago and it's a basically about how #data evens out. Technically, it describes the tendency of a variable lying at an extreme (either side) to draw back or move closer to the norm or average. A lot of people have referred to this concept as a "jinx" because it is sometimes seen as bad luck ; A sportsman who has been enjoying a winning streak suddenly drops (maybe temporarily) to an average performance.
Again, a test may be carried out a second time and it will be observed that those who scored close to 100 (in the first test) scored a bit less and those who scored closer to zero have scored a bit higher: both sets of individuals have drawn closer to the average score and this phenomenon can be explained by regression towards the mean.
