I've come across this article about a 96-year old secretary from Brooklyn who quietly amassed fortune then donated some of it to some college scholarship. Although it is certainly nice to become this rich and help those in need, I still have some mix thoughts about this kind of life. I know that working hard until old age so you can enjoy retirement benefits is such a big thing in high societies. And most people are culturally-conditioned to follow this pattern of life. Or that there's no other way than the American way.
1. What if I'm hit by a bus and killed the day before I retire?
2. What am I going to do if I'm not hit by a bus and killed the day before I retire?
Life's a bit tricky, isn't it? You just don't know what you're going to get. I'm all for working hard just so I won't beg on the streets when I'm old. I don't even want to reach old age as I'd rather not be a burden anymore. Nobody can and will even take care of me unless of course, I can afford a caregiver. Such a popular job in the western society as there are more and more elderly getting dumped by their children into homes. Quite sad.
There's another sweet cake, work your ass off until retirement or until you could afford a grand beach house in the middle of a poor fishing village in the third world. But then it's too late because you're too sick to walk your dogs while watching the sunset and the poor people. Believe me, this happens all the time. So what's the story? Oh probably the wife died, got divorced or something then there's a fisherman who is willing to sell her young daughter so they too, could have better lives. The old man's pension is going to take care of everything anyway. Quite sad.
I know there must be this so-called balance somewhere. To save money for the future while also enjoying it for the short duration of life here on earth. Given my taste for life and adventure, it is quite ridiculous for me to live in one place all my life while being frugal to death. So I can be rich when I'm 96. Say I am rich by 96 and perhaps by that time, I am too sick to scuba dive or hike in the mountains. Nobody is attracted to my posh clothes over my wrinkly skin or my fast car. I can't take all that wealth to my grave. There's no reason to deprive myself all my life because I have no one to pass my wealth to. I am free to live my life according to my own terms, right now.
I don't easily fall for these grand stories spreading these days, like how some were able to buy a big house by being frugal or retiring early by being frugal or getting rich by being frugal and all that. Sure it can happen but come on, these stories left behind some factors to consider. Do these people have parents at least if not rich? Or do they have someone who could help them, someone to turn to in times of need? Are they structurally advantaged in the society? Do they have friend investors or friends working in the banks? Were they born with privileges? Did they inherit a little bit of something? Are they not struggling to live day by day? There are many things that were not considered as to how they got to that high level of life. It's not only about being frugal and all that glamorized rags to riches neoliberal propaganda thing.
The idealist thinking is that we are created equal, like equal human beings who breathe and shit the same. Or face the inconvenient truth that we are not. We are just not. Or that's just how we were conditioned to believe. Equality is a grand illusion. Most people still think they are better than the rest while some think that they are forever slaves. Some people cannot just work until they get old and enjoy high retirement benefits. Social benefits do not work the same everywhere. The majority of people still struggle to live at old age. Some really have nothing. Many people are homeless. Some people are victims of culture and religion. Some people don't inherit anything from their parents or grandparents. Some cannot find jobs anymore. Some risk their lives to cross the border so they too can have a chance to a better life.
The feel-good positivity is not going to work for most because people don't have the same circumstances in life. What works for you will not work for some. My struggle is not yours and vice versa. Some people struggle to put food on the table while some struggle to get their iPhones fixed. Some struggle if they are going to accept their parent's money while some don't even have parents. Some get special treatment in the society while most don't. Perspective changes. Everything is relative.
People work hard all their lives under the illusion of security and the all-too-comfortable. But I guess the question is not really if I'm going to be too old to enjoy my wealth, I guess it's more - will I even get some tiny wealth before I get older? So maybe work hard while taking some holiday every now and then? Sure, that can work. But there's no way I'm going to enclose myself in a box all my life while amassing some useless wealth I can't take with me when I die. I might even die before I even get to that wealthy and comfortable point, who knows? One thing I know for sure is that I don't want to waste my life away. I only have one shot here and I better spend it right.
Hey @Diabolika,
Nice name! I just love this write-up! Old age is overrated. No! I don't think the flowers will smell better. Damn who knows if your olfactory nerves will still be intact by then.
Now you gotta depend on people. What if they don't give a fuck about you? Your kids may just dump you in a home and go their way.
We don't have to work all our lives and wait till old age before we begin to enjoy life. It will surely be too late by then!
Have fun while young so you can have stories to tell when old!
Upvoted & Followed!
I agree! Thanks!
that is why you have to work smart while you are young so you can retire early and enjoy life more before you get too old. your constant moving from one place to another could be your own undoing. but then again who knows. I see a bright future for your plans.
I only work to live and cover my costs, thankfully I enjoy my job. With my ten year plan I will have my own place and running my own center (post to come in the future on this one). All the wealth I accumulate will go into this and bring up my family when I eventually have one!
The problem is well here in England the scamming bastards that run care homes. They charge upwards of four thousand pounds a week to be in one. People know this expense and save all the life so they can rot and live a dull boring existence at a high cost. This may seem harsh but I worked in the for years and many it the same everywhere you go profiting from the dying. instead of changing the paradigm but this is the major problem the acceptance of how things are, sorry going off on a tangent.
In this case though its not about the money it the individual, you can enjoy life with or without money (well you need some). The individual needs to want to do things and have a network about them that facilitates these things. So its better in life to investing in friends and invest in you health and hobbies thats real wealth 💯🐒
True. I don't need to be filthy rich by 96. Good friends and good health are the real wealth!
Right on! 💯🐒
There is a way to balance out saving for the future, and enjoying your time here & now. There's a great book (that I enjoyed) called "The Richest Man in Babylon". It has a bunch of useful money saving / spending techniques that you can incorporate into your everyday life. (Speaking of which, I need to re-read that book!).
Anyway, as the saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". You need to take time for yourself every so often, or you're going to "be bored and become boring". There are too many stresses in life to simply chug along without getting some personal satisfaction once in a while.
Luckily, and unluckily, there is no single correct method for living life. What works for someone else might not work for you... but it can't hurt to try something new! :)
True!
Wow, what a detail analysis of life. Yes different people have different problems and face different circumstances. It is always worthy to take good care of yourself, invest on yourself and enjoy happy life. Keep happy @diabolika
Thanks as always @kamchore!
Life isn't a dress rehearsal. We are all living it right now. I focus on being 100 percent present in each moment I live, anything less is a waste. Attack life and own it!
That's the way to live!
Well said. I was just talking to someone about being too driven and some similar thoughts crossed my mind then. Working and saving are great but, as you point out, if you never get to enjoy it, there was no purpose.
I view those types of people the same way I view very religous people who never try half of what life has to offer because they are banking on some prize when they die. I won't judge them harshly for what they believe but it seems tragic if they turn out to be wrong.
Haha true! Funny thing is that they seem so sure about themselves.
Haha yeah. A lot of people aren't very good at questioning their own beliefs. I knew a few people like that and talking to them was strange because we were roughly the same age but they were so sheltered that it was like trying to relate to a child or something.
I wonder if it is a similar cause for these two things. We live under these systems of authority who have an interest in keeping busy and ignorant. If one works 12 hours a day he or she probably won't have the time or energy to research public policy let alone oppose it. So the "hard worker" is glorified and people come to believe that it is the best thing a person can be. With religion, questions are dangerous and things that will cause people to ask them are forbidden and the idea of piety is tied to "righteous" ignorance. Then again, that could just be some "tin-foil hat" type of "theory" that I got into my head lol.
One can get out of the matrix, it's hard but possible.
Truth. That is kind of related to what I am writing right now, in fact. If I can ever make myself finish editing I should have it posted in a little while but my tendency toward slacking off is pulling me away from being productive right now lol.
Haha I know what you mean. I'm the same atm lol. Too many distractions!
I know right? Every time I start to work, something more fun comes up lol.
That's the reality. You accept it or not. It is what it is.
Some people are so obsessed with chasing the next thing, they literally forget what's going on at present. It is as if they are not available in the present moment.
Future is uncertain. We work so hard for the better future. That's great, but be present. Enjoy every moment. Have some fun!
Thank you @diabolika for sharing this. Hope you will find my posts interesting as I found yours. Followed you!
Great to hear your thoughts and i want to say as i really agree with your words because, our life is uncertain that's for sure because we don't know what will happen in next moment, but this doesn't mean that we should not plan something, instead work hard but enjoy your life too, just don't ruin your current days in fear of future, instead enjoy your current days and also do the hard work, and for other stuff leave it to the flow. Thanks for sharing and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂
Then you have the people like me who will work til I can’t stand and then I still will be poor. I have often thought about suicide.
Suicide sucks, I think, taking a holiday somewhere is way better.
Hopefully we all get some enjoyment out of our life before we have time to think about what we may have missed.
Life is unpredictable, but we must do what we can do before it is too late.
Within a snap of a finger, we could be off this world. But if before you leave you are able to accomplish some things then you will have peace wherever you are
True!
This is life is a bit complicated, we do not know what will happen tomorrow, so you have to enjoy every moment but I think like you do not want to reach old age it's bad to be someone's burden many times they do not want you
I am speechless and all i have nothing much to say. This life is such a tricky journey and everyone has his/her timeframe. I don't know much about your life, but the above sentence mean a lot to me.
Thanks.
I am glad.
