Despite the fact that they built them mainly for practical reasons, bridges are often the most beautiful decoration of the city or country. They are materialized proofs of human skill, and often a silent witness to significant historical events. People have also associated them with different legends for a long time. Europe's most beautiful bridges hide many surprising secrets.
Rialto is one of the four bridges that lead the Grand Canal in Venice and is the oldest. Originally, a pontoon bridge was built in its place since 1181 and replaced by a new wooden building in 1255. In 1444, however, the bridge collapsed when it was overloaded by a crowd watching the escort of ships. The current arched stone bridge was completed in 1591. It is similar to a wooden bridge that preceded it - two ramps covered with shops lead to a simpler central part. The construction of the bridge is so bold that some have predicted a fall. However, the building silenced all the critics, still standing and becoming one of the most important Venetian monuments.
