Knowing the right and wrong path in the moment can be difficult and sometimes impossible. Hindsight is ruthless because it seems to obvious to us now the missteps we took. We didn't have the advantage of learning those lessons we know now when we were taking those steps previously. Being on the wrong path sucks, not know you are on it sucks, but like you said, once you find you are on that wrong path getting off it is important. I think you were right to suggest in talking in talking to people we trust because getting off the wrong path is important, but we need to make sure that we are not stepping on to a even worse path. Clarity is hard in the now and easy when looking back. Getting an outside perspective can help identify those changes and course corrections that need to be made.

experience in life will help teach what is right and wrong. It is the person's choice to make as to what to do. Be upfront with the mistake and never repeat it. Indeed it is easy to say but harder to do.
