MAMANG SORBETERO (ICE CREAM MAN)

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I probably had my first ice cream with Mamang Sorbetero. I still can remember when we hear his bell while he's calling out, "ice cream, ice cream." I would go to him with the best smile on my face handing him a 0.25 coin. Yes, that was the price of two scoops of ice cream on a cone made with barquillos dough.

I was 7 years old.
I loved the jackfruit flavor.

The sorbetero's name is Max. And just a few months ago, my mother saw him. And no, he is not selling ice cream anymore. But he would remember my mother and me because we were his best customers. We bought from him everyday that he comes by our house.

Today, sorbeteros have easy life with pedicab and their ice cream box rolled by it. With Max, he had to push the ice cream cart everyday. The sorbeteros cart has been the emblem of Filipino's hard working spirit.

The photo shows sorbeteros getting ready with the day, stabbing ice blocks to bits to freeze the ice cream in the box.

HAIL TO THE SORBETEROS!
