I find myself thinking about the effects of change and the benefits of following a routine, mainly when trying to plan the daily, weekly and monthly chores to be done around the house. Following a routine makes me feel organized and in control but then, something happens and all my planning gets thrown out the window. And that’s when I start feeling stressed out and uncertainty takes over…
I know I’m not the only one who has a problem with change and I also know, that change is just about the only thing you can count on. No matter whether you are a parent, an employee, a boss, a teacher, a student or some combination of these personal descriptions, sooner or later we will have to deal with change.
I’ve noticed that we are dealing with change on a regular, ongoing basis. Routines can make you feel safe and organized one day and then bored and stuck the following day. But change, can make you feel excited and unsecure at the same time. Luckily, there are certain steps we can take to keep ourselves on an even keel.
The silver lining…
If you are a team leader, parent, a teacher, or employer, it is important to set a good example for others by responding appropriately to change. One must always try to look for the silver lining in changes. It also helps to focus on responding to change in a flexible manner rather than reacting against it.
We often stress out about change, and this can create negative group dynamics. If you are in possession of special knowledge about coming changes, be sure to prepare others first. And then, share the rest of your information with them. If the changes will cause more work or added responsibilities for yourself and others, come up with ways you can help each other out and make the most of the situation.
Staying positive…
If you feel resentful or fearful about the change, take some time to think your feelings through and identify the most positive aspects of the situation. Avoid negative thinking and pessimistic inner talk. Make sure to gather as much information on the matter in order to avoid jumping into wrong conclusions. Instead, focus on the positives of the situation and help yourself make the most of it.
Sometimes we think that we are the only ones stressing about change…
Understand that if you have concerns, others around you probably do as well. When trying to discuss your concerns with others, try not to spread fear and anxiety. Instead, discuss your concerns as a way of brainstorming for good ideas that will help everyone adjust and move forward.
Opportunities…
Look for aspects of changes with which you are not familiar and see them as an opportunity to learn and grow rather than as a burden or threat. Change can be frightening and stressful; however, when you remember that you are setting an example to others, you are sure to want to show yourself in your best light. When you do this, you also benefit yourself.
In the last couple of years I have carried out quite a bit of research on different topics mainly related to self-help. I hope the tips presented above help you handle changes successfully in any situation.
