Many accidents occur because of carelessness or impetuosity. In order to prevent accidents, one must be willing to develop patience and plan ahead.
Always remember that your attitude is of utmost importance in the management of a victim in a medical emergency. If you can appear composed and relaxed, your attitude will be transmitted to the victim and help relieve their anxiety. Relaxation of the victim may ease respiration, slow any serious bleeding, reduce pain, and decrease shock.
You, as the rescuer or first responder, should initially take several deep breaths to establish your composure. It will give you an opportunity to assess the situation and determine a course of action.
Place your hands gently on the victim and speak in soft tones, addressing them by their name. This physical and verbal communication will give the victim reassurance and encourage them to relax.
Be positive. Explain what you are doing and how you can assist during this time of need. The act of appearing composed and in complete control will present the best opportunity for success in a medical emergency.
