How to Properly Deal with Your Intrusive Thoughts?

Hello, dear Steemians!

The human mind is a complicated organism that is often not obedient to our core values and ideals. Sometimes you have thoughts that do not represent the best of what you have to offer.

There are even thoughts that intrude your inner comfort zone at every given opportunity to take away your peace and give you destructive ideas about how you should make decisions in life.

How do we deal with such thoughts that are always there in spite of our lack of consent? How do we destroy intrusive thoughts forever?

Most people would choose the path of denial or ignorance. When you have a thought that is not pleasant or is not in alignment with your higher vision, you decide to ignore its very existence and lock it in the deepest corners of your mind.

Three direct problems arise with this approach. First of all, if you deny the existence of your own thoughts, you strip your own mentality of logical assessment and brand it with illegitimacy. Secondly, you do not actually destroy your intrusive thought, you merely lock it away in a corner of your mind.

Last but not least, a thought that remains with you in hatred and disdain will have all the necessary resources to grow inside your mind and become a true burden in the future.

Acknowledging that you have a certain thought is the first step towards dealing with it in a proper manner. If you let your intrusive thoughts fester, they will inevitably become a hammer that will throw you off balance in life.

If you are having a difficult time accepting that a thought is yours, try to understand the process through which a thought comes to existence.

It is easy to fall under the erroneous argument that every thought represents an inner dimension of the person who conceives them, but the truth is much more complicated than that.

Every thought is first an inspiration that comes from an outside source.

You should not blame yourself for having intrusive thoughts that may not even be yours.

So, the first step towards acknowledging your thoughts is to understand the origin of every thought that ever came into existence.

After that, you must realize that a single thought does not represent you in any way. You need to think about why that thought is haunting your moments and why you are always thinking about a particular thing.

Is it because you want to hurt yourself?

Is it because you have unfinished business with someone or something?

Is it because you feel shame, regret or worse, guilt?

There are many ways you can ask this question, and as hard as it might be to search for an answer, this is the only proper way to deal with your intrusive thoughts.

Think about why you are having a thought, and then think about why it actually bothers you. Running away will not solve anything. Have a conversation with yourself.

Most of our problems would just find solution if we were willing to have a conversation with ourselves.

At the end of the day, your thoughts do not represent who you are.

Rather, you are the one who has the power to give them a sense of identity and belonging.

I wish badly enough that I would have stumbled upon this post a year ago. I've struggled with intrusive thoughts ever since I was a teenager, and they would come at certain times of my life to haunt me -do some damage and leave, only to come back later.

Since meditation came into my life almost a year ago now actually, it foreved changed the way my mind operates, and I will never ever take this incredible practice for granted.
Accepting our thoughts for what they are -without judging them -and without trying to get rid of them - is where lies the answer.

Inside all of us there are two types of thoughts streams. A positive and negative. Negative thinking is the product of our mind which is affected by some inferiority complex. Why our infiltration mind comes into existence is the biggest topic of contemplation for us. First of all, it is necessary to understand the processes through which these intrusion thoughts enter us.
This negative thought grows in us as hatred of inferiority spirit, in the form of vulnerable tendencies, hatred and jealousy. Negative thoughts start to emerge in our mind if such thoughts dominate us. To get rid of such thoughts we need to argue with ourselves which can control these thoughts to a great extent. Start the day with a positive thought, spend time in harmony with the good people and discharge your responsibilities with complete loyalty. Do not give place to mind for infiltration ideas so that it can flourish.

I believe those people who are more of biased towards ideas or just take opinions than facts those I call depressed people tbh, people who don't want to learn and stay ignorant and not face the fact are people who cannot deal with emotional stress, problems, or patience and trust me that is what I felt and read about in books about being biased and keeping ears closed. Oh, we're having a lot of those these days in this part of the world.

Acknowledging that you have a certain thought is the first step towards dealing with it in a proper manner.

This is something some religions force their followers not to do. The idea that we can sin with our thoughts is quite a scary thought becasue 1, we can't control what goes through our minds 100% and 2, we don't want to think about ourselves as irreparable sinners.

You should not blame yourself for having intrusive thoughts that may not even be yours.

This is a great start. The same applies to dreams. I've seen people torture themselves over dreams they've had beause they assume that somethign is wrong with them to have conceived such dreams.

@chbartist, If any negative thoughts are popping up and disturbing our mindset then in my opinion it's not about the ignorance but, we have to understand the thought and we have to understand why this thought is coming up at first place. Sometimes Subconsciously we manifest thoughts and when they arise we don't recognise them, so, thoughts may sound random aspect but in my opinion without any particular reason nothing pops up. I think i a way that human brain is still to complex for us to understand how it works exactly.
There is so much more yet to explored!
And yet we are capable of use not much of our capacity as well know to all of us.

In my opinion, Humanity is kept in darkness and kept away from the true identity of human being. And i think that we don't have only one brain, we have three or four brains we just cannot digest new discovery of ourselves because we are controlled and we are pushed to be limited by the Centralised System, their education system and what not. But our body is so much intelligent and it talks to our consciousness about the missing links and knowledge, in this way we become more explorative and truth Seeker, we are way way more than what we think. Masses are just stuck into the world of Television. Stay blessed brother. 🙂

Wim Hof is not new to me, personally i really liked his determination and he showcased different picture of human capabilities and his life was so rough and in darkest times of adversity, after that he became friend of hyper cold. And in my opinion Wim Hof is one example where it tells that human beings doesn't need to be super man to perform impossible, everything is lying inside us, we have to channel our unknown capabilities and sometimes we come under unknown super natural zone where we will feel new energy and new way of flow, but because we are standing on the dark side we are far away from the actual definition who we are. We are also machine but the difference is, we have soul, in my opinion the agenda is to bring the soulless race. 🙂

Yes, and in my opinion just we have to be vigilant because we never know in which form the deception will arise. What we expected may be is just one more part of deception because, reality lies behind the scenes and in darkness. But we have inner unique undestroyable Technology (Soul) which knows everything, because our flesh is some years old, but our soul is ancient and it can sense and transmit the hidden messages and situations through Intuition, so in my opinion inner language is most important aspect to stand on the path of truth and to sense what's coming. There are thoughts, which usually disturb us in the head, those thoughts are usually negative. With that kind of thoughts, we must be very careful, because they tend to be dangerous. In the case of depressed people can lead them to attempt against their own life and that of others.

My first recommendation to get those thoughts out, would be for people to seek God, to take refuge in the faith and, in prayer, for sure, he will open the doors, so that they can undress their mind and, get out, those thoughts. Then, look for help, talk with those people to whom, you have more confidence about the problems and harmful thoughts that go through your mind and, in case of not getting a solution, ask for psychological help.

We ourselves are owners of our actions, we try that thoughts are translated into positive actions and, as you say we give identity to our belonging

Acquiring the ability to choose our thoughts well is very important for our growth. It helps us enormously to have the mind clear to have it available to perform very important tasks. And getting rid of negative thoughts certainly makes a big difference in our results.

the harmful thoughts, are part of our life, unfortunately, sometimes, the cerbro presents situations that are not pleasant to take them to actions. We must be careful with those thoughts, seek help and try to control our thoughts, do an exercise of how beneficial that would be for us and make the best decisions we can make.

Yes intrusive thoughts do not represent who we are, I think that the source of these thoughts is a negative energy stored inside our subconscious, as you said we must not ignore them but also we must not fight them and waste time and energy to get rid of them, so in my opinion the solution is to admit them and not to give them a great importance because they are just thoughts that come and go without causing real problems like clouds that fill the sky a moment and after it disappear, but to avoid this type of inconvenience it is better to practice important tips for our health (Sport, Meditation, deep breathing, good natural diet, good sleep, reading .. ..)

We must be very clear that it is we who think for ourselves. I say this because sometimes we allow ourselves to be influenced by the thoughts and ideas of others and do not realize that the realities or circumstances of each person are different from them, even though they may resemble them.

You make an imperative point here. When I spend time with a person, or in an environment, the lines of where they end and where I begin tend to get a bit blurry.
Do I really feel this way about myself, or is this how I feel that others perceive me?

Even if their thoughts about me happened to be unsavory, would they even have the tools to judge me, knowing nothing of my own experiences?

The fact that we have been given the liberty to not only think but also act as we like is a powerful demonstration of our capabilities to achieve what we want in life. Sometimes we are the main roadblock!

When I consume high levels of sugars, I begin to have disturbing thoughts and magnify any situation however small. So the practice of proper diet, deep breathing, prayer and deep meditation on the good that is in everything created, have given me long days of peace and tranquility without these kinds of concerns.

A high risk in which we tend to fall with these intrusive thoughts, is to use almost always the word "no". "I can not, this I will not be able to overcome, I will never be forgiven, I will not be able to get it ...". These kinds of thoughts are not constructive. They are fully and absolutely destructive. Also not only are they negative, but we come to believe them, hence a large part of their danger.

Far from giving us a solution and to relax, it makes us fall into an abyss with no way out. What if we do an inverse exercise? What if we build more creative thoughts that can give us some satisfaction? Creativity is important and in the same way that we use the "no" for a thought, we can use more real concepts. For example, instead of saying "I'm always wrong", we can replace it with "sometimes I'm wrong, but I also have my good times".
A mistake is an opportunity for improvement. A door that closes, are two that open around us, it is simply to know how to see them.

One thing we must keep in mind is that we have the mind of Christ, that is biblical, the battle is in our mind, God always has thoughts of good and not of evil, of health and not of disease, of wealth and not of poverty , of blessing and not of cursing.

The dialogue with us and our fears, is an ally to inquire into our sorrows. These thoughts that we sometimes want to investigate, will always indicate that something is not in order.

As you said in previous post and in this post, we must constantly question ourselves, to know the why of things, we have the answer, but we seldom know, we silence our intention, hoping that someone gives us the key to be happy, when we have all the perfect tools to be and live as we want.

Recuerdo claramente cuando mi hijo mayor se graduó de bachiller, El quería estudiar ARQUITECTURA, siempre me lo decía, y el día que tenia que llenar la planilla de opción a l cupo universitario coloco la opción medicina, ésto me sorprendió tanto y su respuesta fue porque todos sus amigos iban a estudiar medicina y el lo hizo por motivación a ellos. Después de 10 años mi hijo ha cambiado a tres carreras y aún no se gradúa de la universidad. Puedo comprender estos pensamientos......

In simple terms these are good and bad thoughts.
Good thoughts would lead us to improve our lives. Bad thoughts would lead us to slothfulness and eventually ruin our lives.
Why these thoughts just pops-up in our minds?
It often times occur when we're at rest, or at peace or maybe during fasting or prayers or meditations when we empty ourselves.
These thoughts just came out of nowhere.
@chbartist explained it very well. I just explain it in my personal view and understanding.
In my experience, @chbartist is true that we have to confront these thoughts and distinguish with solid valid reason which are good thoughts and which are not.

Think about why you are having a thought, and then think about why it actually bothers you. Running away will not solve anything. Have a conversation with yourself.

Thoughts intrusive are vampires that steal your emotional energy because you push feel rage, sadness, these are really annoying. Repress only makes these thoughts are more insistent and frequent. Meditate on them, looking for its origin, is the best way to delete them. If it is caused by a dislike or conflict on the other person, it's time to ask forgiveness to him or her. Greetings

Blaming oneself for having intrusive thought will only breed more guilt, self pity and depression. Embracing these thought and owning them give you control over them and gradually you find it easier to discard them because they don't control you. For example, The fact that you're always thinking about the opposite sex doesn't make you bad or corrupt as a youth.. Coz its normal to have such feelings.
So embracing and owning that thought gives you control over the actions that follow rather than feeling bad and guilty about something that's just normal.
Also the immediate environment plays a significant role too... Too much pessimism slowly Sows seeds of negativity in Young Minds.

Estos pensamientos intrusivos pueden venir de la obsesión generada a causa del querer controlar de manera absoluta nuestras acciones, por no permitir tolerancia a los errores. Pero de esta actitud de "control total" es la que crea la incertidumbre, causante de los pensamientos intrusivos.

El autor Giorgio Nardone, en su libro "Pienso luego sufro", nos explica; como las dudas son el trampolín para lanzar nuestro pensamiento creativo, pero también dispara nuestro pensamiento obsesivo.

Cuando estamos en presencia de pensamientos intrusivos de forma frecuente, debemos de buscar la ayuda especializada que nos oriente en el manejo de estas situaciones, aplicando las herramientas adecuadas que permitan solventar el problema desde la raíz.

I use a similar tactic with negative thoughts and emotions where I reason with them & make a point to always come out on top. If something starts pervading my consciousness with negativity, I'll ask ask myself "is that really true" or "does it have to be that way" and I find it gives me power over them.

Sometimes even things like "that's not even my problem" or "That's not important anymore, so I don't need to think about that" for those times when I find myself reliving past events that had a negative impact.

yes dear your thought just clicked my mind i have jst experience such thing all we think there is effective ratio of environment in it. if man is continuously doing good deed with people and he always get negitv response then he will stop doing good deeds becz his mind will create thoughts that if u do any thing good u will get bad from people stop doing that,more we try to ignore these thoughts more we will get femilar with it and last we will stuck and consider that its true...so we have to set our mind before that we are not doing good deeds for purposes to get positive response but for the sake of humanity and for self satisfaction that we are good.i m just impressed with your thoughts keep sharing...

This one line clearly pictures us the beginning point of all problems that start through intrusive thoughts.

Not only here, but also in many cases, our minds indulge in the denial factor and do you know the extreme and unfortunate part of it? It even denies that it is IGNORANT! Why? Because it is ignorant.

Comfort zone is really a matter of serious consideration because if we thinking about it the we loss opportunity to do something. When we are using defincive approach then it is hard to get a chance to be successful because our mind is looking a way of comfort.
Negative thoughts also leads us to failure. We have to be positive to achieve our goals and objectives.

There are thoughts that are inevitable ... This week I have been dealing with worrying thoughts, because of the situation that the country is going through, this week it became more aggravated by the presidential announcements, and I try to handle them, but although I have been very optimistic Sometimes it is very hard not to feel a negative feeling! And I've really always tried to be optimistic and transmite it on to the people around me ... but maybe this week I'm more sensitive ...
