WHAT IS AN IGLÚ?
It is a house built with blocks of ice, which is usually characterized by its hemispherical shape.
is a term that belongs to the Inuit language, spoken by the Eskimos (the people of the Mongol race who live in the Arctic).
MEANING OF IGLU?
Ice house inhabited by the Eskimos and other villages with similar characteristics during the winter. These shelters are usually, therefore, temporary and are widely used by hunters.
HOW ARE THEY BUILT?
Building an igloo is simple and economical, which makes this type of housing a frequent alternative for Eskimos. Developing other structures in the frozen and isolated regions, however, is very expensive.
The originality and uniqueness of this type of construction has led to the establishment of igloos with a clear tourism objective in different parts of the world. So, for example, in Andorra there is an igloo village that allows you to enjoy those peculiar accommodations during a small stay or vacation.
It can be distinguished, roughly, between three kinds of iglú. The smallest is the one built by hunters and they look for a nocturnal refuge while they go through frozen areas to obtain food. Other igloos are larger and are used as a family home during the winter. The larger iglús, on the other hand, are permanent and have several rooms.
The iglú is built with compact snow and blocks of ice. The usual thing is that the iglú rises in the same place where the snow is extracted for the structure. The Eskimos do not appeal to any provisional support structure, but support one block of ice on another until closing the space.
In addition to all this, we must highlight these other hallmarks of the iglús:
• They are usually made in the shape of a dome.
• The back part is usually used as a bed.
• The usual thing is that the door is very small, to avoid the entry of cold and should be oriented to leeward.
• Temperatures ranging from -7º to 16º can be registered inside.
• It is essential that there is a hole in its upper part, so that all the gases that can be harmful and lethal to the human being can escape through it.
• On some occasions, they even include a window to give greater luminosity to the interior.
Unlike what you might think, the interior of the iglú is comfortable since the snow has good insulating properties. In any case, some Eskimo villages cover the interior of the house with animal skins to increase the internal temperature.
In conclusion; The iglú is so important in some parts of the world, because of the work it does and how significant it is, that it has even been established as part of the shield of territories. A good example of this is Nunavut, in Canada, near East Greenland, which subsists basically thanks to the exploitation of mineral resources as well as fishing and even agriculture.
It should not be overlooked that IGLU stands for the University Management and Leadership Institute of Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic.
