How Google Maps Taught Me to Go Deep (And Nowhere)

Map Fishes

Sometimes, when I’m sitting with myself, wondering what to do now, because something has to be next, because there's too many things to choose from, because anything and everything COULD be next, I'll pull up the Google Maps app as if I'm going somewhere.

I wasn't aware I was pulling up Google Maps. My phone's in my hands, and I'm caught between "now" and "next," and suddenly I'm staring at this empty map.

Every time this happens, I wonder for a second where I’m going.

For a second, it's real, I'm going somewhere, and this excites me.

Something's planned.

I have a life.

Of course, within moments, I realize I’m not going anywhere, though my subconscious plots otherwise.

At least, my subconscious seems to think I secretly should want to go somewhere.

Like I have this secret mission, and I have to venture out into the open air if I’m to catch wind of it.

Or should I say, the open water. The deep. The dead zones of our minds. Where we swim with our weird whales and go down in cages to where those ancient sharks lurk in the abyss.

Because everything's getting to be too much.

Products. Shows. Movies. Books. Podcasts. YouTube videos. Tweets. Instagram posts. SteemIt blog posts. Medium blog posts. Online Courses. Comedy specials. Memes. Current events. News to watch. Coins to buy. Things to learn. Games to play. Experiences to have. Places to go. People to see. Me to become. All those me's to become.

It's everything, after all.

It's obvious, isn't it?

I keep pulling up the map because I'm going nowhere.

Not like this. Not in this world of surfaces, and shallow waters. Not in this world of material distractions. Not in this world of minnows dreaming they are whales.

You can't evolve into a whale unless you venture into those deep waters.

And that's what I'll do. The deep. That's where I'm going: Into Myself.

Anything less, and I'm swimming with the map fishes.

Anything more, and I'm nothing. Just another piece of infinity.
