First time I've seen "potpourri" since my childhood, and I'm grateful for the fragrant memories your post stirs up. My mom's style was to place dried rose petals and other naturally fragrant plants into a decorative bowl. I like your idea of the mason jars even better, because then you can seal it up when it's not in use and then open the lid as desired–I think your method would be longer lasting.
