What is a Minimalism?

In my own non-minimalist, layman understanding, it is simply about living with less material goods and focusing and prioritising our energies and resources on what we value and what is important. So those who embrace minimalism would find fulfillment, purpose and joy in alternative ways, perhaps more experiential ways rather than in the pursuit of materials goods, or climbing the corporate ladder, chasing after power and the big bucks.

I have read about minimalism online, offline on books and also learned about it through documentaries and find myself extremely drawn to this lifestyle. The following article explains why I find this lifestyle attractive and I hope I am not alone in my sentiments.

1. Space to Breathe

Personally, I love space. It is so beautiful. Space in a room cannot be bought with any amount of money. Yet the importance of space is sometimes unrecognised by those who choose to focus on things rather than what is not there.

For Japanese, space or emptiness is recognised as a beauty which is deliberately protected as seen in the bareness or lack of lushness in traditional Zen Gardens (Above).

The Chinese also recognised the importance of space and gives it priority in their traditional gardens where expanse of space are in the center of the garden, leaving the plant features at the periphery as you can observe in the photo of the Yu Yuan Garden in China (Above). Space is definitely a key feature.

The greatest significance of space is it nurtures life. Space allows activities, movement, exercise, breathing, relaxation, creation, reflection. It is difficult to create without space. A blank canvas is often the space needed by artists to create their masterpiece.

It is difficult to breathe without space. If a space is surrounded by objects, it can be overwhelming and the objects imposes a power over the individual in the "space", drawing energies away from the person to all the objects which scream for attention and your energy. Children cannot play without space. People cannot roam and dream without space.

But here's the twist, even space or "emptiness" is never empty from a scientific point of view because even a cup is never empty. For an "empty" cup is actually full of air.
