Wow!!! One of the most interesting and engaging courses I ever took in university was an American History class. As a Canadian these are sometimes scarce but I have always been a history buff and American history was always so interesting. Andrew Carnegie was a man we spent a great deal of time discussing. He was ahead of his time from and industrial and economic standpoint but on top of all that he looked to help build a better America for everyone.
I feel like people often get caught up in the power that wealth provides and miss the opportunity to do some great things with that wealth. When I sit back and look at the sheer value of the estates of some of he wealthiest people in the world and see that they give very little back it makes me sad. The quote about dying wealthy being shameful is profound. Once you have made sure your family is provided for then you should look to help others.
These are the people that are true hero’s. Those who give because it is the right thing to do and without seeking out recognition.
For no recognition, they'd need to do it anonymously. I still think there is some ego involved, but that's probably forgivable. It's certainly a lot better to put that money to work to help people than to keep it and continue trying to make more even when they are far beyond that need.
