IT'S AN EMPHATIC YES!!

The people of Australia have spoken, and spoken loudly. The results are in, and the clear majority, 61.6%, of those who had their say are in favour of marraige equality. The remarkable thing about this result is that the voter turnout was a massive 79.5 percent. That's over 12 million people voting out of a possible 16 million. That goes to show how important the outcome of this voluntary survey is to the people.

The question was:

Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?

Here are some stats to digest, taken from the Australian Bureau of Standards Results Report:

  • 12,727,920 million people participated, out of more than 16 million eligible voters, a 79.5% participation rate.
  • 7,817,247 (61.6%) of participants voted "YES"
  • 4,873,987 (38.4%) of participants voted "NO"
  • Out of 150 Federal Electoral Divisions, 133 had a majority yes vote, and 17 had a majority no vote.
  • Every State and Territory had a yes majority of iver 60%, except New South Whales which had a yes majority of 57.8%.

For a full breakdown of results you can visit the official ABS Results page.

With a result this overwhelming, the government has received a mandate from the people to make a change. There will be a lot of debate over the implementation of the marraige equality act, or whatever it will be called.

Something to remember is that this is not a religious imposition, but a civil or legal measure to recognise same-sex unions under the same legal framework as heterosexual marraiges. Churches will not be required to perform these marraige ceremonies, but they will be expected to recognise the legal right of same-sex couples to be legaly joined under the law.

Let's hope the framework put in place protects both sides of the debate from unnecessary vilification.

The people have spoken, now the government MUST act!

Either way, this is a huge win for democracy, and a massive show of support for the LGBTI community from the majority of Australia.

Sort:

FYI, the vote counts were allegedly "eventful".

After a few additional items were found in the envelopes, they had to weigh the envelope.

If the envelope was heavier than it should have been, then it was destroyed. As people were putting in obscene material, such as, condoms and used condoms.

Also, some people signed the forms in blood and poop. And actually wrote "this is signed in sh_t".

So, the Counters had to deal with different types of voter "protest" via the mail.

Yeah, I heard about those. It's unfortunate there is a tiny minority which resort to trying to harm and disrupt proceedings.

I was surprised to learn you guys hadn't had this earlier. We've been gay in Canada for a long time 😛

haha youre so funny goldenarms..and handsome :)

Indeed you have ;) Now that's it's done, hopefully the wheels will turn a little faster to get things done.
