I feel like I have learned a lot of things during this pandemic. Having the extra time to work on my home, my garden and myself has been a positive experience amongst all the bad. I lost my livelihood as an esthetician along with my business due to the lockdowns here in So Cal. If it wasn’t for all my side businesses I don’t know where I’d be. I’m grateful for that.
On a positive note, today I was accepted into the law program I wanted to take! It’s scary and exciting, I’m 43 and starting anew is going to be something extremely interesting for me. I’ve been in the beauty industry for 20 plus years!!!! Eeeek! I’m glad I have my little family and my Hive tribe to keep me going! Thank you for always being such an awesome supportive bunch!
With all that extra time I’ve been working almost 12 hours a day filling up my pantry! Dehydrating, canning, pickling... you name it! I even started dabbling in making sodas, kombucha beer and beer!
During the weekend I dug out some ginger and thanks to the weather it seemed to cure just enough for me to make some easy ginger bug!
What is ginger bug you might ask? Ginger bug is the fermented starter you use to make delicious ginger beer! Nothing beats homemade ginger beer! And it’s easy to make!
Ingredients
2 inch piece ginger
2 tbsp white granulated sugar
1 cup water
Directions
- Grate your ginger, skin and all.
- Add to a clean mason jar and throw in your sugar.
- Add your water.
- Stir and use a cheesecloth to cover the top. Keep it in a dim warm area.
- To this concoction you will add 2 teaspoons of sugar daily. Feeding it allows it to ferment. In a couple of days you will see it start to bubble and it’s then you know you’re ready to add to your ginger “tea” for a second fermentation which will produce fizzy ginger beer!
I will be sharing the recipe for the rest of the steps as soon as this batch is ready!
I hope you are all safe and staying out of harms way! Can’t wait for you to try making your own ginger bug!

Congrats on beginning your new education. This year is very interesting indeed and is pushing people into things that they hadn't thought possible before. Flexibility is a very good thing to have in these times.
I love ginger. I love beer. I love simple. This is all of them and I have to try this.
I just wish I could grow ginger here, thankfully it is not too expensive.
Thank you friend this truly means a lot. So many doors have been opened with this new so-called normal right?
You can actually grow ginger indoors as a houseplant! I grow mine indoors and outdoors! Leah rhizome on top of semi dump dirt and watch it grow it doesn’t even need to be in direct sunlight!
I've only managed indoors once, it was not the best soil I think or I did not water it right. Some things I can grow super well, others... well not quite so well.
Like me trying to grow cucumbers lol😋
I can’t wait to come over and try some ginger beer! You look so pretty ❤️
Thanks kiddo I can’t wait to see you! Love you so much💜 Xo, mom💜
Good luck, not that you need it you will smash it :)
