As the economy gets tighter I have been seeing the animal shelters fill to overflowing with beloved pets.

Heartbroken families feeling forced to let go of their pets because they can't afford to pay for their food or medical expenses. There are resources to help people be able to afford to keep their loved family members through financial crises.

1. Think out of the box: use Instagram and social media to get sponsors for your animal's needs. You would be surprised how many animals have bigger followings than people.

2. Bags of food often break open during shipping or get returned because someone's pet didn't like the brand. The manufactures credit the store back for these bags that are often thrown away if not given away.

3. Many animal shelters, vets, and pet food stores have programs to help families afford their pets during hard times or a crisis. Contact your local shelters, vets, and stores or go online to find out what's available in your area.

4. Some pet food manufacturers have consumer marketing studies where they will send you free food in exchange for detailed reviews of the products. These are a bit harder to find but they are out there. You can usually find that if you contact the band headquarters they can direct you to their marketing agency.

5. Grocery stores and butcher shops. Grocery stores also have damaged bags they sell for less or give away and the butchers have bones, fat trimmings, and undesirable cuts that are thrown into the trash unless given away.

6. Last, on my list a solution, most people don't know even exists. There are some Non-profit programs that take in pets until the family gets back on their feet. A temporary stay for people facing medical emergencies, loss of a job, natural disasters and more. Google temporary shelters.

Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed for showing your love! It is alright to ask for help and you may be surprised at what you find!

My point is to get creative and think outside of the box to find unconventional solutions!
