Welcome to the daily Philosopher.
Here to enhance your day with wise words of the great philosophers and thinkers of past and present.
Epictetus(AD 50 – 135) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was born a slave at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present day Pamukkale, Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and The Enchiridion.
When you look back on the teachings of people such as Epictetus it is remarkable to think that these words were written roughly 1900 years ago, yet in 2017 we have a mental health epidemic on our hands, much of which is caused by our amazing ability to think about and dwell on the things that either have already happened, or things that are yet to happen, neither of which we have any control over!
The only things we can truly have control over is our own thoughts and our own actions, yet we still struggle so hard with the first.
This quote helps ground me when I am worried about what the future holds, or my many past mistakes.
I hope it helps you.
