Good afternoon my friends….^^
Today, I want to introduce a “Jang-Dok-Dae”.
Jang-Dok-Dae is a platform for crocks of sauces and condiments.
The stones are stacked two or three times to make a high stand for some area.
It is usually located on the eastern side of the sun.
In the large house, it is made in the backyard, and in the small house, it is made in the front yard.
The largest jar is used for soy sauces, and the middle size one used for fermented soybean paste.
Small jars will be in the front row contain hot pepper paste (Gochujang) and pickles.
The bigger the house, the larger the size of the Jang-Dok-Dae.
Korean have used crocks made of potteries clay traditionally.
Mothers or grandmothers in the family have kept foods in the crocks or clay potteries in different sizes.
Since traditional Korean crocks or potteries are made of clay, they breathe through tiny pores in them.
Therefore foods in the traditional Korean crocks or potteries are well preserved over time in good condition.
Typical traditional foods that have been kept in those crocks or potteries are kimchi, soybean paste, soybean sauce and so on.
In the past, many households had this special place in the backyard called Jang-Dok-Dae where these crocks were placed.
Since spices are necessary for making tasty Korean foods, taking good care of the Jang-Dok-Dae was an important job for many housewives.
However, as many people live in apartments, it is difficult to find it these days.
