When you join a libertarian community in Facebook, Twitter, Discord, among others social medias, you can be sure that at least 30% of the discussion is about the non-aggression principle (NAP) and/or if X violates it. The thing is, it doesn't matter…
If you consider yourself a true libertarian the first thing that you have to agree is that you don’t know whats best for other people. The NAP isn’t a law, it can’t be enforced and it doesn’t need to be discussed further on.
"Being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions."
- LOCKE (1689)
The idea is pretty simple, yet so many people fail to understand. Those from the outside or that are new to libertarian ideas commonly mistake the NAP for the “Ultimate Justice System for the Ancapistan™” but that’s straight up wrong. It isn’t justice, neither it tries to replace it. As the name says, it is a principle, something to live for, the idea that harming others people natural rights is wrong.
Then you start to see abortion discussions, and, goddamn how I hate them. Its too much brain power lost.
Assuming that unborn babies “have the right to have a NAP”, yes, abortion is wrong. But why in this god forsaken world does this matter in the least? As we seen, the NAP or any other law in a libertarian society can’t be enforced without consent, you can’t punish someone for having an abortion.
- The baby isn’t your property
- The mother of said baby it’s none of your business
- Its another person’s life, you don’t get the right of self-defense for them
Libertarian societies WILL have abortion clinics left and right. There is nothing to do here.
If you want to do something for the movement, support the content creators that you like and/or agree, share your ideas in your home, school, work, etc, find ways of reducing government power in your life, and, for the love of god, don’t waste time discussing something non-productive…
Abortion debates suck the life energy right out of my body, ughh
