Hey there steemit world. And what a world it is.
It’s rather exciting to see such an idea put into action, it makes me feel very small and very big simultaneously.
My name is Anna; I’m a to-be teacher and a children’s entertainer. I facepaint, I flit around in a fairy costume, and occasionally, I trip over imaginary rocks.
Less occasionally, and notably less interestingly, I study maths, Social Studies, English and how to teach people stuff.
I am a master procrastinator and I frequently lie that I am not.
My favourite thing in the world is words that make you wiggle your body in reaction.
I’m here to learn about crypto-currency. I’m also here to learn with other people like me, who know nothing about crypto except that they should know about crypto. I'm hoping there's a few of you still out there.
I may also like to to talk about other things I’m learning; for example new ways to paint some-one, or the sudden awareness of the constant battle I have with myself to shave my armpits, or maybe even some new sphere of knowledge that wraps round the old retinas.
But to start, I’d like to share where I am with learning about crypto.
So this all started about a month ago, when my boyfriend suddenly pulled into a void of absolutely devouring data regarding bitcoin.
Now it has to be mentioned here, that I am not a person who uses the internet to its full potential. I am one of those shameful, shameful creatures that prowls through Facebook feeds, mindlessly watching videos of things that will probably never ever be useful to me. For some reason it tends to be videos of either glamazons contouring their face or videos of sassy children being generally more talented and hilarious than I ever could hope to be.
I digress. The point is, I don’t do computer world.
For a while, I resisted his new obsession. Was jealous of it, even.
But I was thrust into this sudden urgent need to know about crypto when I was losing touch with an important relationship in my life.
And then, it became obvious as I picked up whiffs of my boyfriends perspiration as he furiously did the coding thing; making ‘wallets’ and reading graphs and talking incessantly about a ‘Matthew Silver’, that I too, needed to get on this train before it left.
So the first thing I did, (after my designated period of procrastination and cleaning other peoples kitchens needlessly) was jump on youtube and learn about bitcoin. There were a few documentaries that kind of loudly proclaimed how great bitcoin was, so it confirmed the suspicions I had about that, but it didn’t tell me how it actually worked.
By the third video, I started getting a feel for where bitcoin came from. The name 'Satoshi Nakamoto’ occurred, and my interest piqued. Who was this mysterious person that is changing the financial world as we know it? What other secrets is the internet hiding? Is he the faceless leader of a revolution?
My dramatic tendencies really started flaring up at this point; so I refocused by starting to write what I know down.
Ok. It went something like this:
There’s no middle man. No bank. No fees. No Inflation.
There’s only so many coins of bit. 21 million coins of bit, to be exact.
They are worth around 4 and a half grand in Australia now. Shit. That’s a lot of money.
There is a chain of blocks. A blockchain.
It arose from the ashes of the GFC in 2008. (*question: what other things have risen from the ashes of the GFC that I haven’t noticed yet??)
The blockchain is like a ledger, that tells the world who has what.
The ledger’s legitimacy is maintained by lots of people qualifying the ledger and agreeing on its data.
There are miners.
Miners solve maths problems.
Functions actually. Functions are the designated way to solve an equation.
But they’re the sort of functions that don’t go backwards.
Hmmmm. I’m starting to get confused at this point. So I drew some stuff that I thought might help me see the process better. I’ll attach that here. This is pretty much as much as I have learnt so far.
I’m mulling on what I know at the moment, letting little pieces click into place.
That’s all I have to share for now, feel free to leave comments and help me figure this shit out. OR ask questions to help me figure this shit out.
Thanks for having a browse.
Welcome @ordinarydaze, hope to see interesting blog posts from you !
Hey Anna! welcome, cool post and thanks for sharing! Love the flower on your face! Looking forwards to read your stuff :D Have a nice day!
Hello and welcome to Steemit! Be careful with crypto. It is gambling just like most other investments. Think of it as a poker table, and you're playing cards. The more people that sit at the table and the more money they put into the hand, the more the hand (crypto coin) is worth.
It is something like 1600 people own 90% of the BTC. That's a pretty serious pyramid scheme if you ask me. If those people walked away from the poker table, the value of your BTC would drop. Worse, banks are the real government. They control the fiat to crypto and back transactions. At any time they can turn that off. What would the value of crypto be then if people could no longer convert back and forth to their bank accounts? I strongly suggest it would be a lot less.
I'm not saying to avoid it either. Invest. Speculate. Just don't make it more than 5-10% of your total wealth. Diversify your wealth/savings as much as possible to protect them. You never want too much in one basket.
"No fees. No Inflation." Is not true either sadly. There are huge fees when using exchanges. Inflation is complicated. No, no more BTC can be made, but an infinite amount of other coins can be. BTC can hard fork again too. Crypto is the opposite of Gresham's Law. Good coins replace bad coins, and better coins can be made at any moment. Don't depend on one coin to be king forever in other words, limited supply or not.
There are a ton of other webpages to help you with Steemit. Here are some of the best for beginners:
https://steemd.com/ (This site is used to keep track of your voting power and other stats. You do not want to run out of voting power, and you only get so much per day. I keep my voting power around 80% for example.)
https://steem.makerwannabe.com/ (This site will tell you who follows you, who unfollows you, and who mutes you. It is great for meeting new people too. I regularly check it to see who has followed me to see if I should follow them back.)
https://steemit.chat/ (This site is the official chat webpage for Steemit. There are Discord channels too, but I usually stick to the official site. Come in to network and meet new friends. You can directly message people there too, so it makes it easier to communicate with your closest friends.)
Oh yeah, there are a lot of bots on here. If you see a cookie cutter reply, especially to your intro post, it is almost certainly a bot. Check the account's reputation. If it is low, I would recommend just ignoring them. Everything is public on Steemit, so you can go look at an account's comments and replies. Are they all the same? It's a bot.
Adding photos to your account as a new Steemian may be confusing at first too. The easiest way it to click to "Submit a Story." Once in there, use the built in Steemit tool to upload an image from your computer. Below the posting window, you will see "Insert images by dragging & dropping, pasting from the clipboard, or by selecting them." Click on the blue text. Once the image is uploaded, you can copy and paste the link into your account settings.
Verifying your identity is very important because it will get you more support and people will trust you more. The best way to verify is to link back to your Steemit account by using another public social media account. For example, I posted my Steemit articles from here through my Twitter account. Another person posted their Steemit information on their Facebook account. Some people will even post a video of themselves writing out their account information since that cannot be Photoshopped. The more famous a person is or the more valuable their content is, the more important it is that they verify. If a new account falls within those two categories and fails to verify, it may get blacklisted.
Again, welcome, and I've followed you! If you have any questions about getting started, look me up on the chat site.
Hi Finnian!
Thank you so much for this reply, it's exactly what I've been waiting for. It was suggested to me yesterday that bitcoin was a bit like a pyramid scheme. I hadn't really thought about it that way up until that point.
I managed to post a couple of photos in this post... but admittedly did find that confusing at first.
Negative comments about crypto basically get ignored on here, but please definitely keep a clear mind about it. A lot of people are losing their minds and doing very unreasonable things (putting all their wealth into one basket).
Great advice; thank-you for being so straight up!
Nice Post. I follow you now. @thunderland
Have fun with steemit.
Thanks!

As a newcomer to steemit, it's not easy getting those big upvotes so maybe you want to try @MinnowPowerUp where you can earn up to 30% more steem power than just directly powering up! It's a subscription based daily upvote bot that draws its power from a delegation pool. I also recently made this post explaining my experience with it in more depth while earning over $1 per day in upvotes.
