Mid-oceanic ridges and rift valleys.

Under the sea, the plates stretch and split at a divergent plate boundary. A fissure is formed at the plate boundary. Hot magma rises through the lithosphere and fills the fissure. The hot lava cools upon contact with the water and solidifies to create new crustal materials.

The newly formed crustal materials are hot and have a low density. Therefore, they rise above the existing crust and form a ridge on the seabed known as a mid-oceanic ridge. Two famous examples are the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the Atlantic Ocean and the East Pacific Rise (Ridge) in the South-east Pacific region.

Ridge push causes the plates to move apart at these plate boundaries. Tensional force occurs. This causes normal faults to develop gradually on the mid-oceanic ridge. When the central block sinks along the faults, a rift valley is formed.

Formation of mid-oceanic ridge and a rift valley :
Step 1: Plates move apart at the plate boundary. A fissure forms
Step 2: Magma rises and fills the fissure. It solidifies and forms a mid-oceanic ridge
Step 3: Under tensional force, normal faults occur. As plates continue to move apart, the central block sinks to form a rift valley. New fissure appears under tensional force.
Step 4: Earlier crust is carried away from the ridge when plates move apart. Magma rises and solidifies at the new fissure.
Step 5: New normal faults occur. Central block sinks and a new rift valley forms.
Step 6: The processes repeat and the mid-oceanic ridge extends sideways.
