I have not seen many movies with a plot that takes place underwater, and the few I saw, I saw a long time ago, so I do not think I can speak well about it or contribute something coherent. And I'm not saying that this is a good, quality and interesting review, but I'm sure this is my best option.
In the year 2000, still far from being the figure he is today in Hollywood and his symbiotic association with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio worked in films that were not the blockbusters that we know today, an example is The Beach.
The film, directed by Danny Boyle, who is known for his works on Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and many more, tells the story of Richard, a character played by DiCaprio, who travels to Thailand in search of adventure. There he meets a French couple, Étienne and Françoise, played by Guillaume Canet and Virginie Ledoyen.
One day Richard meets Daffy, who is played by Robert Carlyle, a mentally unstable traveler who, corrupted by drugs, acts with paranoia and tells Richard about the location of a paradise island to which tourists have no access, and It is inhabited by people from different countries of the world who have decided to stay there to live, maintaining a lifestyle of comfort and relaxation.
Motivated by the information that Daffy gave him, and with the help of a map that he has drawn, Richard decides to go to the island and invite Étienne and Françoise, who agree to go with him. However, upon arrival on the island, what they find is a cannabis plantation heavily guarded by men with assault rifles, whom they fortunately evade.
A short time later, they meet a group of people who appear to be the inhabitants of the island, and who are led by Sal, a character played by Tilda Swinton. The inhabitants initially reject Richard and his French friends, but when they explain that they have been referred by Daffy, the situation changes, and they are accepted.
But soon that earthly paradise is transformed into an oppressive monotony, and behind the appearance of communal happiness is the shadow of the tyranny imparted by Sal and the indolence and indifference of the inhabitants, in addition to the greater danger represented in the hostile relations they have with the owners of the cannabis plantation.
The film has its great defects, and also some virtues, seen by the indicated eye even has some charisma. It will not be the best nor the worst work of the director, and that is precisely why it is unnoticed.
Does it deserve to be seen?
Yes.
Will everyone like it?
No.

This movie has its interesting points, but in general... I think almost of the situations are very inert and without major impacts.

I really didn't like Leo's acting in this... Plus the original character of Richard was British if i am not mistaken but they had to change everything to suit Leo. Lovely scenery, but a completely silly story especially the part where Leo imagines his life as a video game.
