Fields and clouds using a smartphone in HDR mode

I took these two landscape photographs from the top of Pidley Hill in Cambridgeshire. Two of my favorite subjects are fields and clouds and using my smartphone set in high dynamic range (HDR) mode often gives some nice results.

So what is HDR? I'm no expert but the simplest way that I can explain it, is that the phone/camera takes three images almost simultaneously and then combines them into one image. Think of it like three photos. One red, one blue and one green. With those three photos the possibilities for adaptations are almost endless.

The phones forward facing camera has a 13 megapixel sensor and to get good results. You have to hold the camera very still to avoid blurring the image. Holding it steady allows the sensor to pick up more light.

It is a bit odd these days with instant everything that you have to take some time with this method but it makes you consider the subject (in this case the landscape) more carefully.

These two photographs were taken within seconds of each other and by adjusting the image in post production using a simple photo editor we can get a completely different feel to the image.

Thanks buddy, on a clear day you can see for miles and I like the name of the place :)

Wow I learned something new today. HDR. Thanks for the contributions. Same here one of my favorites subjects in photography includes the clouds.

Clouds are a great subject as they are constantly changing. A bit like life?
