Nature and Geometry

While driving through Zion National Park last fall I saw this little tree clinging to a boulder off the side of the road, and thinking it would be a good subject for some night photography, I came back after twilight and set up the camera for startrails.

Composition was difficult in the dark, but I had a couple of lights to illuminate the striated foreground. I spent some minutes light painting the subject tree and the rock and the surrounding landscape before leaving the camera alone for an hour to collect continuous 30-second exposures of the earth's rotation.

The final challenge was combining all the elements in Photoshop in a way that looked natural, but I'm happy with the result; I like the geometry, the way the star and rock circles flow together, and the coincidental but seemingly artificial line that cuts across the middle of the frame and makes it look like two photos stuck together.

What do you think? Was it worth the late night out?

The line is the icing on the cake for me! Perfect!

Oh, cool, I'm glad you think it's a feature and not a bug. 😄

that line is messing with my brain :D

In a good way? 🤔

in a weird way. as at moments it looks like 2 photos. and i like the shape of the ground stone but not sure how i feel about that line. but i don't see that kind of rocks on daily bases so maybe that is why

Well, maybe this photo is better as more of a conversation piece than a perfect work of art, haha!

the thing that is weird to my brain is the transformation of shape of those rocks. and it is exactly on that line or light.
But i am not even sure did i seen that rocks ever in my life so that could be the reason :)

The rocks are pretty crazy in Utah, haha! It's not strange to see hard lines separating sections of the rocks there.

Stunning. I love the interaction between the star trails and the swirls in the rock.

Awesome, thank you! Glad you like it. :)

So dope

Thanks, Wes! How are you??

I have been good lately. We have been busy, but are doing pretty good right now. What about you?

Kind of a surreal image here.

Yeah, it's a different one, haha.
