과달키비르 강(Rio Guadalquivir)

세비야의 과달키비르 강입니다. 따스한 햇살을 받으며 여유롭게 산책하기 좋은 곳입니다. 강의 크기가 크고 수량이 풍부해서 배들이 다니기 용이했기 때문에 과거 교역에서의 교통로의 역할을 통해 세비야의 번영을 가져다 준 강이기도 합니다. 야경도 아름다워서 강가에 줄지어 있는 작은 바의 야외 테이블에 앉아 맥주 한 잔의 여유를 부려봐도 좋을 것 같습니다.

This is Rio Guadalquivir. You can take a walk along the river indulging yourself in the pleasant weather. The size and the amount of water of the river allowed big ships to come through which led to the prosperity of Seville. The view after dark is also very beautiful and it is really nice to take time to have a glass of beer in small bars alongside the river.

황금의 탑 (Torre del Oro)

강가를 걷다 보면 나오는 황금의 탑입니다. 과거 황금의 탑과 지금은 없지만 과달키비르 강 건너편에 있었던 은의 탑을 쇠사슬로 연결하여 세비야로 들어오는 배들을 검문했던 곳이라고 하네요. 저는 황금의 탑이란 이름때문에 돌탑인 황금의 탑을 처음 보고는 조금 실망했던 기억이 나는데요. 누구도 정확히 어떻게 이 탑이 황금의 탑이란 이름을 가지게 되었는지는 알지 못한다고 하네요. 다만 과거 황금의 탑의 윗부분이 황금색 타일로 장식되어 있었다는 설과 옛날 아메리카 대륙을 발견하여 아메리카 대륙으로부터 약탈한 황금을 황금의 탑 안에 쌓아 보관했다라는 설 등 황금의 탑이란 이름에 대한 여러 추측들이 존재합니다. 여러분은 어떤 전설이 제일 신빙성 있다고 생각하시나요?

When you stroll along Rio Guadalquivir, you will see Torre del Oro which means "tower of gold". They used to have a chain that connects the Tower of Gold with the Tower of Silver which used to be located across the river and checked the in ships coming and going through the river. I remember the first time I saw the Tower of Gold. I was a bit disappointed to see a tower made of stones because of its name. No one knows exactly how the tower got its name, but some say that it's because the upper part of the tower used to be decorated with golden tiles and others say that it's because they used to store gold plundered from America in the tower. What legend do you think is the more plausible?

세비야대학 (Universidad de Sevilla)

과거 왕립 담배 공장이었던 세비야 대학교입니다. 세비야 대학교는 단과대가 도시 곳곳에 흩어져 있는데 이 건물은 인문대학으로 쓰이고 있는 것으로 알고있습니다. 과거 왕립 담배 공장은 유럽 담배의 2/3을 생산하고 약 1만명의 여공들을 고용할 정도로 큰 공장이었다고 합니다. 여공들을 고용한 이유는 남성을 고용하면 공장의 담배를 피우거나 빼돌릴 우려가 있다고 생각했기 때문이라고 합니다. 세비야 대학교는 오페라 카르멘의 배경으로도 유명하죠. 오페라 카르멘의 주인공인 카르멘이 대표하는 왕립 담배 공장의 여공들은 높은 보수의 경제력을 갖춘 당시 일종의 신여성의 표상이었다고 하네요.

This is the University of Seville, which used to be a royal tobacco factory. University of Seville has colleges scattered throughout the city, and I think that this building is liberal arts college. In the past, the Royal Tobacco Factory was so big that it produced about two-thirds of European tobacco and employed about 10,000 female workers. Noticed how I said "female" workers? They used to hire female workers because they male workers might smoke or take away the tabacco produced from the factory. University of Seville is also famous for the opera Carmen. The character of Carmen who was a worker at the factory represents a strong and independent woman of economic power in those days.
