Korean Food Introduction 101

Hello~!

So from now on, I will keep posting the series of Korean food. Many people know kimchi, and maybe Korean BBQ, but not more than that. Korea has a rich history and culture of food. We have used many diverse sauce and way of cooking which make a great flavor and nutrition. Korean food is all about the good match between all ingredients, not only for the taste but also for the health. Besides, each city has its own style of food, so people even go on a trip for the food in each area. More interestingly, still some big family own the recipe book which was delivered from generation to generation (as I remember correct, the oldest recipe book they still keep in their family is from 15 c, guess the museum could have older one). Anyway I hope this is helpful for you guys.

First food I want to introduce is the “Ddeok-bo-ki (떡볶이).” This food is loved by everyone especially, most of people (I guess all hehe) could have this food near the elementary school, middle and high school. It is food related with youth memory. Also, it is most of time budget friendly choice! But that does not mean that it is not yummy. Actually, it is one of my favorite food in Korea :-p. Let’s look at the picture!

Here it is, as you can see, there are eggs, noodle and carrot. The white sticks are ‘rice cake’ or ‘flour cake’ depending on the cook’s preference. Also the thin sliced stuff is fish cake. Usually, you can kind of choose what you will use in some restaurant of ddeokbokki, like you can add the sausage, ham, seafood, cheese and all kinds of ingredients might make good harmony.

After you eat it, usually you can ask the staff to stir the rice. Then the staff dumps most of the soup part and put the rice and some veggies, sesame seed oil and stir it for you.

Some restaurant also puts the pizza cheese on top of this, um. it’s really hard to resist even though you might be already full from Deeokbokki. So people usually ask for this stir fry. :-p

This food is all time best seller, so with the demand this food is evolving constantly. There are sooooo many different restaurant with this food. If you cannot handle any tiny bit of spice, then maybe this menu is not for you, sorry about that. . .
