Principles of creating HanGwr Alphabet
I told you that HanGWR symbolized sound as a design.
King Sejong created a consonant(alphabet)of HanGwr, mimicking the shape of a human vocal organ.
First, I'm going to talk about the principle of making consonants that are fundamental.
The basic consonant is a design representation of the shape of the phonetic organ.
‘ㄱ’ is the sound of a molar.
The sound of the tongue blocking the throat ================> g
‘ㄴ’ is the sound of the tongue.
The sound of the tongue touching the upper part of the gum ===> n
‘ㅁ’ is the sound of lips.
A voice symbolizing the shape of a person's lips ==============> m
'ㅅ' is the sound of teeth.
A picture of the shape of a tooth ===========================> s
‘ㅇ’ is the voice of the throat.
The sound imitating the shape of the throat ===============> * or x
This is a new consonant(alphabet) made by adding strokes to the basic consonants according to the strength of the sound.
'ㅋ' is a letter made by adding one stroke to 'ㄱ' ==============> k
'ㄷ' is a letter made by adding one stroke to 'ㄴ' ==============> d
'ㅂ' is a letter made by adding one stroke to both sides of 'ㅁ' ====> b
'ㅈ' is a letter made by adding a stroke to 'ㅅ' =================> j
'ㅌ' is a letter formed by adding a stroke to 'ㄷ' ================> t
'ㅍ' is a letter made by adding two strokes to both sides of 'ㅁ' ===> p
'ㅊ' is a letter made by adding one stroke to ‘ㅈ’ ==============> ch
'ㅎ' is a letter made by adding two strokes to 'ㅇ' ==============> h
'ㆆ' is a character created by adding a stroke to 'ㅇ', but it is not used at present.
There is a consonant that is expressed differently by changing the shape of the basic consonant.
'ㄹ' is the currently used letter ================================> r
'ㆁ' is not currently used.
'ㅿ' is also not currently used.
At the beginning of HanGwr, 17 consonants were created, but now 14 consonants are used.
Then, he created a vowel of HanGwr, symbolizing heaven, earth, and people.
The shapes of the heaven(天), the earth(地), and the people(人) are represented.
The round shape of the sky is shaped into ‘ ∙ ’
He made ‘ l ’ as if the man was standing.
The flat shape of the ground was made into ‘ ㅡ ’
‘ ∙ ’ ‘ l ’ ‘ ㅡ ’ : This is the three basic vowels(alphabet).
He added a stroke again and added ‘ ㅡ ’ to ‘ ∙ ’ to create ‘ㅗ’ , ‘ㅜ’.
And he added ‘ ㅣ ’ to ‘ ∙ ’ to create ‘ ㅓ ’ , ‘ ㅏ ’
Likewise, he added two ‘ ∙ ’ to create ‘ ㅛ ’ , ‘ ㅠ ’ , ‘ ㅕ ’ , ‘ ㅑ ’.
‘ ∙ ’ is not currently used in the HanGwr vowel.
It has played a very important role and is now gone.
Hangul consonants and vowels(HanGwr RoMang’s Notation)
Currently used consonant 14 letters
ㄱ(g) ㄴ(n) ㄷ(d) ㄹ(r) ㅁ(m) ㅂ(b) ㅅ(s) ㅇ( or x) ㅈ(j) ㅊ(ch) ㅋ(k) ㅌ(t) ㅍ(p) ㅎ(h)
Currently used vowel 10 letters
ㅏ(a) ㅑ(ya) ㅓ(e) ㅕ(ye) ㅗ(o) ㅛ(yo) ㅜ(u) ㅠ(yu) ㅡ(w)ㅣ(y)
HanGwr consists of 24 consonants and vowels in total.
The English alphabet is 26 letters in total, and the Korean alphabet is composed of 24 letters.
So it is much easier to learn HanGwr. Please study Korean more hard from now on.
