The only way to see the big picture triumph over the overcrowded middle is to have an edge in knowledge. When you reach a point knowing a little of bit of everything, then you become untouchable.
I'm a renaissance man, but I wouldn't consider it an advantage really at all. It makes life more interesting for me but doesn't necessarily give me more opportunities. As far as typical career success is concerned, the most important thing for people is that they have standout talent and exceptional knowledge that is in limited supply or entirely unique to themselves.
Most people would spend a lot of time getting decent at a lot of things and end up mastering nothing. You are much better off mastering one or two things than becoming a jack of all trades.
