It's late Winter here in Sydney, and flowering bulbs are lighting up gardens. Kniphofia ( Red Hot Poker Lily ) is warming up Winter with it's Red, Orange or Yellow flowers. Red Hot Pokers are Native to Africa and are one of the toughest, hard -to-kill plants. Bulbs are available during Winter months at nurseries, or if you know someone who has a few clumps of these plants, ask them if you can dig or divide them and grow your own. Hummingbirds and bees love the flowers as they are rich in sugary nectar. Plant them in Full Sun for best results, preferably in the garden, as the plants grow too big for pots. The sword-shaped leaves grow up to 5 feet long and the plants grow into large clumps. Photos are from a Sydney Garden.
Kniphofia uvaria is commonly known as a Red Hot Poker, Torch Lily or sometimes a Tritoma. Depending on the variety, the flame colored flower spikes will reach 2-5 feet in height. The flower's coloring may range from ivory and orange to coral red. If you have sufficient space, you can select varieties to provide bloom during every month from May through October!
Source
Kniphofia must be grown in full sun. Provide adequate spacing for these plants which may spread up to three feet over time. Good drainage is essential to prevent crown rot, otherwise these plants are tolerant of most soil types. Torch Lilies will survive periods of drought but they will grow much better if they are given abundant water during hot weather.
Source
As long as you provide adequate water and fertilizer, and deadhead spent bloom stalks regularly, the hummingbirds will appreciate it because the gazillions of tubular flowers that make up the showy cones are filled with irresistible nectar.

@ctrl-alt-nwo,
It's beautiful, never see this at my country Sri Lanka! But I am personally won't plant this at my garden, coz it's a bush type plant! So, snakes can have shelters with these bush type plants! Otherwise this is better!
Cheers~
Awww i love snakes !
Red-hot pokers make rewarding and often long-lived garden plants. Their distinctively-shaped blooms are among the most spectacular of hardy flowers, and their long season means that by careful plant choice gardeners can enjoy them between spring and late autumn.
Recent breeding work means there is a larger range and improved colours available to gardeners, with smaller habits and neater foliage. Colours range from red and orange through yellow to green and even brown and pin.
Kniphofias are generally easy to grow given the right conditions. For optimum performance choose a spot in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil that isn’t too wet over winter. Smaller, narrow-leaved cultivars such as ‘Bees' Sunset’ are easier to combine with other plants than the larger sorts, and grow well in pots and containers.

@ctrl-alt-nwo, That's really awesome flowers indeed plant. It has awesome looks. Well introduction with nice captures. I add some via web.
Plant taxonomy places red hot poker plants in the genus, Kniphofia. They go by other common plant names as well, including "tritoma" and "torch lily."
While some information below applies in a general sense to the genus, the focus is on three dwarf types whose cultivar names are 'Pineapple Popsicle,' 'Mango Popsicle,' and 'Redhot Popsicle.'
Plant Type
Red hot poker plants are herbaceous perennials. In spite of their common name, "torch lily," they are not true lilies (i.e., they are not members of the Liliaceae.
Red hot pokers make good edging plants and surely are striking enough and blossom long enough to serve as specimen plants. Their drought resistance makes them suitable for use in rock gardens, although, considering their vigor, only for expansive rock gardens. In regions where torch lilies exhibit a proclivity to spread readily, they may make good ground covers.

Drought and heat tolerant Red Hot Poker plants are easy to grow. They will do well in mid summer's heat, when other plants have wilted. They are great for arid, and semi-arid areas. You may know Red Hot Poker by another name. It is also called Torch Lily and Poker Plant. They are native to South Africa.
Red Hot Poker grows two to five feet high, depending upon variety. The leaves are long, thin and dagger-like. They produce flowered spikes from spring through fall, as long as you deadhead the spent spikes. Flower colors include the ever popular red (of course!), orange, coral, cream and yellow. It should come as no surprise that Hummingbirds like the tubular florets.
Red Hot Poker plants look their best when grown in clumps, and displaying lots of blooms. Check the height of the variety you purchase, to determine where it best fits in your mixed flower garden. We also suggest they are placed within easy viewing, so you won't miss the Hummingbirds when they visit!

Tips for Planting Kniphofia Flowers
Kniphofia is commonly known as red hot poker, although species come in a variety of colors such as yellow and beige. This plant often has features on the borders of gardens and bouquets because of the striking flowers.
Kniphofia is a cypress plant with thin leaves, like grass and erect stems. He has a number of flower tubes that form nails resembling torches. Coloring becomes more intense towards the tip of the surge. The more common variety is living red and yellow, although soft and green creams are also available. The flowers themselves produce a lot of nectar when blooming, making them attractive to wildlife.
There are more than 70 Kniphofia species and they are garden plants that are easy to grow and strong. They are part of the Xanthorrhoeaceae family in the Asphodeloideae subfamily.
The best way is to plant it in full sun, even though they can tolerate partial shade. Some thought must be given to their position on the border, because they can grow to 1.2 meters and 0.6 meters wide. After the flowers die, their nails must be removed and mulch applied. The leaves must be cut back to the ground in the spring to keep them fresh.

Beautiful red lilies! Seen these flowers in books but never saw them in real life. Five meter leaf! That could become a jungle of red and orange lilies!
Would love to have some bulbs! But they won’t survive the rainy season here!
Your comment section always turns into a riot of wonderful colour.
Cheers.
You could try some raised garden beds with good drainage. Yeah the comments are great ! I'll have to break out the riot police, chortle, chortle.
It's amazing how the same plants in each country are called differently. I know it as a plant Kniphophia. High spike inflorescences of these plants consist of a number of hanging tubular flowers. Inflorescences bright red in the upper part, orange and yellow - in the bottom, which gives the impression of a burning torch. They are located at the ends of tall (70-100 cm) peduncles, emerging from the rosettes of cereal leaves.

Never seen it before anywhere you shared a very interesting post with awesome pictures wow :D
This is the case when many sources write that this plant in our area is widely known and many plant this plant. But, I never saw this plant on lawns)) In your photos, the buds of flowers look like bright leaves of sedum . I do not know what to compare with this. I saw something similar, but the flowers looked like bells.
Yes, Aloe plants- a type of succulent - like Sedum, have similar flowers. Good observation.
Nature at its beauty
The name is indeed very unique ;) Red Hot Poker Lily liked it very much
It sure is a great source of food for birds ;)
Perfect shots buddy :)
liked them !
Do animals like deer and kangaroo eat the flowers? They are striking plants.
I would say yes they would eat the flowers. Daffodils would be more resistant to animals, as they don't like the taste.
This plant is very helpful for bees and other nectar-feeding animals and a good ornamental plant too for our gardens. @ctrl-alt-nwo
Those red hot pokers look very impressive. I tried planting over 100 bulbs a few years ago and nothing came up. When I dug around I found that they were all missing, it seems I provided a feed for the local fauna. I may have another go with the pokers.
Yeah, try em again. You might have to wait another little while to buy the bulbs again though. They're flowering now.
Next spring I think, it has been too dry this year😊.
Ya, when I plant stuff, seems I am just feeding the wildlife
Try some Daffodils, they don't like the taste.
Thanks for you
Red Hot Poker Plant Trimming – Do You Cut Back Red Hot Poker Plants
Image by hraska Red hot poker plants are exotic beauties in the garden, but extremely easy to grow. The bright, wand-like flowers are beloved by hummingbirds and always please gardeners with their low-maintenance ways. When the correct arrives, you’ll want to start cutting back red hot poker plants. Read on for information about exactly when and how to trim a red hot poker plant. Do You Cut Back Red Hot Poker Plants After Flowering? Red hot poker plants form clumps of slender, grass-like foliage. The stems rise above the foliage and bear the long, colorful blossoms. Most cultivars start flowering by late June and some re-bloom until frost. Do you cut back red hot poker plants when the flowers fade? The answer is a decisive no. Pruning a red hot poker plant’s foliage at this time is not a good idea. You’ll want to leave the foliage in place. During this time, the leaves will be gathering sunlight to create enough food to provide for the red hot poker plant through winter. Be sure to provide about an inch of irrigation every week during the growing season.

Hot poker::
hot poker, burn lily, knofflers citation needed or poker plant, is a sort of lasting blooming plants in the family Asphodelaceae, first depicted as a variety in 1794.[3] It is local to Africa. Herbaceous species and cross breeds have limited, grass-like leaves 10– 100 cm (4– 39 in) long, while evergreen species have more extensive, tie molded foliage up to 1.5 m 5 ft long. All plants create spikes of upright, brilliantly hued blossoms well over the foliage, in shades of red, orange and yellow, regularly bicoloured. The blossoms deliver bounteous nectar while sprouting and are alluring to honey bees. In the New World they may pull in sap-suckers, for example, hummingbirds and New World orioles….

Knifofiya - exotic in our country. It is a very exotic looking perennial plant that got to Russia from Africa. It is a bundle of narrow gray-green leaves, the length of which reaches half a meter. During the summer from June to September, each bush constantly throws out very large peduncles, at the end of which, in the form of a spike, there are flowers in the form of tubules. And the color of flowers varies from the base of the peduncle to the top, passing all shades from the lightest to the darkest. Very valuable quality - the flowers are in the cut up to two weeks.

Red Hot Poker Plant Features
It's pretty obvious where kniphofia got its common name, red hot poker. This tough-as-nails, sun-loving perennial produces tall spikes of red, yellow, or bi-colored flowers in mid- to late summer. Red hot poker's flowers are also nectar-rich so they will draw butterflies and hummingbirds from miles around.
Plus, even when not in bloom, the lance-shaped foliage of red hot poker adds interest and texture in the garden. In the northern part of its range, red hot poker is evergreen, adding color to your garden even in the drabbest months. Red hot poker grows 2 to 3 feet tall and is rabbit and deer resistant. Hardy from zones 5-9.
Red Hot Poker Growing Instructions
Plant red hot poker in a sunny spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sun a day. Red hot poker is not fussy about soil type, but prefers life on the dry side so keep it away from poorly drained locations. Clip away the flower stalks after they fade.
Red Hot Poker is not recommended for human or animal consumption.

Red Hot Poker Lily Planting Guide
Looking for something with an exotic air? The name is a tongue twister (pronounced nee-FOF-ee-a) but these plants are easy to grow - many even say tough to kill - and deliver colorful, spiky, wand-like flowers that hummingbirds love. Once established, these Red Hot Poker plants can also manage drought, although they tend to bloom more profusely with supplemental water.
Outdoor Beds
Find a location where the soil drains well. If there are still water puddles 5-6 hours after a hard rain, scout out another site. Or amend the soil with the addition of organic material to raise the level 2"-3" to improve the drainage. Peat moss, compost, ground bark or decomposed manure all work well and are widely available. Kniphofia will not survive in soils that are water logged.
Site your kniphofia where they'll get full day sun.
Plant the field grown rhizomes 3-4" deep and 18-24" apart. The rhizomes you receive will have roots attached so it will be easy to determine which end is "up". After planting, water well to settle the soil around the roots.
Fresh roots will begin to grow and top growth will become evident within a few weeks. Provide supplemental water, as needed in the spring and summer; about 1" per week is a good, general estimate. The soil can be allowed to dry out in the fall and winter.
Flowers develop during the summer and last for weeks. Feel free to cut blooms for arrangements as this will not hurt your plants. In fact, clipping off flower stalks often encourages the production of more blossoms.
After blooming has finished for the season leave the foliage in place; don't cut it off. The leaves will gather sunlight, create food through photosynthesis and strengthen the plant for the future. Water as needed during active growth periods; about 1" of moisture per week is a good estimate. No extra water is typically needed in the fall and winter.
As cooler weather arrives in the fall, kniphofia leaves may yellow and die back as the plant slips into dormancy. Foliage may be cut back at this point. Your kniphofia plant will rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle in spring. In warm regions, red hot poker lily foliage may stay green year round.
Pots, Barrels, Tubs & Urns
Kniphofia are generally not recommended for containers because mature plants grow into large clumps that often measure 2-3 feet across.

These Red Hot Pokers look really beautiful.
Over here in Germany we got a lot of ball thistle at the moment. I like the color and the shape of the flower.
Wow they are a lovely colour and shape. We have several types of thistle here, but they are a problem plant with very thorny leaves and stems, and they seed readily. At least they have a good function in holding the soil together.
Red hot poker is awesome plant with its beautiful colors . I like it's beauty in your blog as well as comment section . Thanks .
