Respect for our Troops

in #kindness7 years ago (edited)

I originally wasn't going to write about this experience of mine because I did not regard it as anything worth writing a blog post about but now that @walkingkeys has made a contest about it, I figured why not. I do not have any photographic evidence or video because what I did was just spur of the moment and I did not think much of it to photograph it.

I was at In and Out with some friends of mine coming back from a road trip after competing in a Collegiate Model UN competition in Sacramento. While we were eating, I saw this elderly man in a wheelchair with a couple other people sit down at a table as one of the other younger people with him ordered food. I noticed he was wearing a hat that said "WW2 Veteran" and we all started talking about it. We wondered which front he fought on and what job he may have had or what he could have experienced fighting in the most brutal war humanity has ever seen. Then my mind wandered to how much these people have sacrificed in defense of our way of life and freedom, and what I could do to extend my regard and appreciation. I figured that just thanking him for his service might make his day just so he knows there are people out there who respect veterans for what they have done for our country. After we were done eating, I went over to where he was sitting and said "Excuse me sir, I just wanted to come over here and thank you for your service!" Now this may have seemed like a small thing, but I hope I was at least able to make his day. I was nervous to just approach this man as a total stranger but the smile he gave when he said your welcome made me think that he really appreciated what I did so I am glad I did it.
