Each Item in Your Life has a Story
Here are three random items most people have in their lives. When I first took the pictures, I didn't think much about it.
Why did you take this picture in the first place, you might ask.
Good question!!!
@ijmmai hosts a contest to win SBI. If you know what that is, you know that Joseph puts out a post at least once a week with all the contests you can enter to win a Steem Basic Income Membership. If you don't know what it is, I advice you to go to the @steembasicincome account and read up on the project as fast as you can.
And, btw. we are hosting a contest at the Freewrite House (@freewritehouse) every Tuesday to win SBI and check out this one as well. The We-Write
But onward to the contest at hand.
The Carabiner
As you can see, the carabiner is my keyring. Once upon a time, I had fancy keyrings and not so fancy ones. They all are items of the past never to return.
That simple little carabiner has saved me hours of frantically looking for my keys, turning purses upside down and generally getting a little panicked with the thought that the keys are lost.
If you are a guy reading this, you have no idea what I am talking about.
If you are a woman, especially a mom sporting the big purse with all the "eventuals" we tend to carry with us all the time, get yourself a carabiner and attach it to your keys right now!!
As soon as you leave the house or the car, clip the keys to your purse.
After your purse is zipped up, nobody can get to it!!
If you are not using a carabiner to hold your keys - what are you waiting for!!!
The Tape
Tape holds things together! We all know that. And we love it, right?
I think people are in love with tape because I see so many packages covered in it - so much so that hardly any cardboard shows.
Do I love it?
NO!!!
Yes, I get that it is useful and all - but it is made from plastic!!
That means that it is not recyclable and adds to the plastic pollution we are already facing. It even makes cardboard recycling more difficult!
I use cardboard in my yard as a weed barrier and I can tell you from my own experience how difficult it is to remove all that tape people love to wrap their boxes in.
When I grew up, we send a lot of packages and used string made from hemp to secure them - fully reusable and when it reaches the end of its usefulness as a string, it can be composted and turned into fertilizer.
Today, I don't think packages wrapped with string are being accepted.
The good news is that there is an alternative!
Water activated tape is recyclable. It maybe costs a little bit more to purchase but will be so much cheaper in the long run. We don't even know yet what the use of plastic is costing us!
Money for cleanup and the many ways it impacts our health.
Shells
Shells are so useful!!!
These are clam shells. My former in-laws used to go clam digging every year and they dug up plenty. Most people throw the shells away after they are done eating. I collect them from everyone who wants to give them to me.
They are a good longterm source of calcium for the garden. Did you know that clam shells have been found under trees far, far from the ocean?
The First Nation People were avid gardeners - just so different from what we view as gardening that the settlers coming to this land saw wilderness. The shells are one proof of the management of nature.
The shells break down over time and are like a slow-release fertilizer for the plants they are placed under.
On my urban homestead, I also like them because they look pretty, they add habitat for insects, and help to harvest water.

The carabiner key ring reminded me of my Mum and she kept her keys with a napkin pin.
She lived like 8 apartments away. So when she visited or when she took the kids down to the playground, she only needed her keys and her lift tag. So she'd pin it to her dress haha.
I really enjoyed reading this :)
Yes! A pin would work well! Nice that your mom lived so close to you. I am sure your kids miss her.
