Back in 1995, the initial Jumanji gave viewers a breathtaking, family-friendly venture featuring a pair of orphaned siblings whose lives are upended meanwhile a mysterious board game brings all the surprise and threat of a wonderful jungle to life in their New Hampshire city. Famous director Joe Johnston bound heart, excitement, and laughs into the movie, which also featured the late Robin Williams in one of his numerous notable performances.

More than 2 decades succeeding, Bad Teacher and Sex Tape director Jake Kasdan bring the tale of that iconic game back to the big shade in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, a sequel to the 1995 cinema that gives it a simultaneous update, more grown-up themes, and a cast of well-known faces. Although it doesn’t really catch the same insight of wonder and suspense that fueled the first film, Welcome to the Jungle still manages to offer an entertaining venture — primarily due to its charismatic, talented, gifted stars.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson titles a cast in Welcome to the Jungle that also stars Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Guardians of the Galaxy actress Karen Gillan. The actors portray a quartet of colourful game avatars inhabited by four high-school classmates who find a dusty old copy of Jumanji — instantly in video game form — while clasped in detention together. Tasked by returning a mystic jewel to the extensive stone idol it was withdrawn from, the youths need to master to work mutually using the strengths and vulnerabilities essential to their in-game avatars in order to return to the genuine world.

The film’s proficient quartet of camera-friendly actors are more than able of carrying a cinema individually, but rather than climbing on each other’s toes in Welcome to the Jungle, they act off one another expertly and make the scenes they share extra exciting together. Johnson and Hart’s chemistry was previously a known commodity thanks to last year’s Central Intelligence, but the extension of comedy veteran Black, as well as Gillan — who’s shown a knack for comedic timing in the Guardians films, as well as some seasons of Doctor Who — makes a funny cast considerably impressive.

With similar lines, while Johnson’s action chops are well established, anyone unknown with Gillan’s strength to kick ample quantities of on-screen butt will get well-acquainted with this performance over the course of Welcome to the Jungle. Enduring her own in both the action also funny scenes along the likes of such heavyweights (literally and figuratively) in both styles, Gillan just might be the film’s best-kept mystery and its most delightful surprise.

Great performances aside, there’s yet quite a bit that undoes the 2017 version of Jumanji from its antecedent, and the achievement of the film will likely depend on how audiences respond to those fundamental differences (or how prepared they are for those differences).

Where the 1995 film highlighted a pair of young kids dealing with nasty elements taken toward their world by the magic board game, the sequence pits the numerous threats posed by the game toward youthful players. That difference in age shifts the comedy of the movie — and its whole aspect, really — away from the youth purity of the first movie and into the range of prevalent genital gags and overflowing hormones. This change is indicated in the more restricted PG-13 rating for Welcome to the Jungle (the original Jumanji carried a more family-friendly PG rating), however it might be an undesirable astonishment for viewers presuming one more all-ages venture.

With the exception of Flight of the Conchords actor Rhys Darby, who plays the group’s initial guideline to the world of Jumanji, the shielding cast of Welcome to the Jungle also leaves a bit to aspire. Boardwalk Empire actor Bobby Cannavale is a comparatively forgettable villain with ill-defined magical powers, and musician-turned-actor Nick Jonas doesn’t submit himself into his position as another youthful player stuck in the game with almost as much enthusiasm as his co-leads.
