ドウダンツツジの魅力　Attraction of White enkianthus

今回はちょうど見頃のドウダンツツジについて書かせていただきます。

This time I will write about White enkianthus at best time.

園芸の世界ではポピュラーなドウダンですが、実際この植物の魅力は意外と見落とされているのではないかと私は感じています。

It is popular in the world of gardening, but I feel that the appeal of this plant is surprisingly overlooked.

灯台躑躅（ドウダンツツジ／Dodan-tsutsuji）
White enkianthus
Enkianthus perulatus.

• 京都では主に生垣や庭園のワンポイントとしてとても多く植栽されています。

• In Kyoto it is planted very much mainly as one point of hedge and garden.
  
  主な理由として

・剪定に強い
・生命力が強く強健
・手間がかからない

As a main reason
・Strong pruning
・Life power is strong and robust
・It does not take time and effort

そして何と言っても晩秋から真冬に真っ赤に紅葉する葉がとても美しいということでしょう！

And anyway the leaves turn red in autumn from late autumn will be very beautiful!

その赤さはハンパではありません。
目にしみるようなビビッドな赤。朱色がかった赤ではなくバラのような真紅です。

The redness is not a extraordinary.
It's a vivid red-vermilion red as it looks like an eccentric red instead of a reddish red.

それだけでも観賞価値は十分すぎるほどなのですが、春に咲くドウダンツツジの花はおもわず笑顔にならざるを得ないほど可愛らしいのです。新緑の葉に小さなスズランのような白い花が無数に散りばめられた姿は男の私でも「カワイイ！」と言いながら小走りで駆け寄ってしまうのでした。

Even just that, the viewing value is about enough, but the flowers of White enkianthus blooming in spring are obliged to be smiling. The appearance of a white flower like a small valley on the fresh green leaves innumerably scattered around me was running chewy while saying "It is cute!"

そんなドウダンツツジですが園芸店や盆栽の展示即売会でドウダンツツジを見かけることはとても稀です。
なんというか、ありふれた「生垣用の植物」という感じで正当に評価されていない感じがします。

Although it is such a White enkianthus, it is very rare to see White enkianthus at a gardening store or a bonsai exhibition spot sale.
What it says, it feels like it is not appreciated by the common touch of 'a plant for hedge'.

一部の園芸業者さんの口からは「すごくよい種なのに、みんななんで（育成）やらないんだろう」という声もちらほら伺う事があります。プロは魅力を分かっている、でも売れないと思い込まれているので店頭に並ばない。
市場的にはなんだか非常にもったいないポジションにおられるドウダン。

From the mouth of some horticultural businessmen, there are things we heard saying "Even though they are very good seeds, they will not do (nurture)". Professional understands charm, but because it is thought that it will not sell, it does not line up at the shop front.
White enkianthus is in a position that is quite a waste in the market.

去年、発色最高の素晴らしい株から種子を集めておいたので今年は播種してみようと思っております。
（ちなみに、植物の発色は土壌の影響によるところが多いので必ずしも同じ色になるとは限りません）

Last year, I collected seeds from wonderful stocks with the best coloring, so I'm planning to sown this year.
(Incidentally, color development of plants is due to the influence of soil so not necessarily the same color necessarily)

更紗灯台（サラサドウダン／Sarasa-doudan）
English name is Unknown
Enkianthus campanulatus.

ドウダンツツジの仲間に、サラサドウダンという品種改良種も存在していて、これまた絶句ものの可愛さです。

Incidentally, there is also a breeding species called Sakura Doudan, which is also cute.
