I went from btc to steem, and completely skipped ethereum. Perhaps I should get some ether? But I think steem has more potential.

Holding some might not hurt!
I would strongly suggest so. Ethereum like Steem has a great community behind it as well. It never hurts to diversify. Personally I believe in Steem and Ethereum just as well. There should be enough space for a few cryptocurrencies when the total market cap could be in the Trillions someday. :)
