Mom Famous For Having 6,000 Tumors Lives In Darkness
Libby Huffer was a teenager when she learned she had neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic disorder that causes hard non-cancerous growths to form on the body.
The small tumors covered Libby from head-to-toe and caused chronic pain. As a result, she was bullied during her adolescence and treated like a “circus freak.” Her classmates constantly picked on her and called her names like “lizard breath” and “toad.”
Libby’s condition only worsened when she was pregnant with her daughter Lindsey (due to hormones), until 6,000 tumors covered her body.
The anguished mother was put on 13 different medications. Even hugging her own daughter caused physical pain.
The emotional trauma was equally debilitating, as Libby resorted to isolation to avoid negative attention:
“I can’t even go for groceries without someone saying, ‘What’s that all over you?’ or pointing at me with their kids saying, ‘Look at her.’ Someday, it would be wonderful not to have to worry about how I look, or what clothes will hide my bumps.”
Over the years, Libby underwent 10 surgeries to remove the tumors, but none of the procedures worked.
