The Calling
The events narrated here are part of my memory, I can not and I will never forget them, even if I wanted to; I did not feel relief or security about what is real and what is fictitious, for this reason I will narrate this story in the third person, to feel that I am not part of it, although inevitably if I am a part and I am the living story.
It was January 14, 1999, a day like any other, that a fact, a situation that might seem normal, in the eyes of the most observant, but that actually turned out to be a heartbreaking, sordid, and disturbing experience.
That cloudy day dawned, it was not winter, but as the weather is tropical and unpredictable sometimes it rains without reason, without reason, without warning.
That day, a child, almost adolescent, an only child, of a loving father and mother, and grandson of the sweetest grandmother, dreamed among his sheets, heard whispers in his dreams and outside, as when dreaming of hearing a bird and resulting That bird does not sing in your dreams, but this stop in your window, but they were not birds Ricky heard, they were dark sounds and prayers and he did not understand well what they said; past 6am, the child begins to hear the call of his mother:
-"Wake up Ricky it's time to go to school"
his mother said, but Ricky really was very sleepy, he felt heavy, as if his bed was tied, between sleeping and awake, he heard those voices, intermingled with his mother's call that was getting stronger, and a distant and whispering voice that I hardly understood, I only heard what he said:
- "Take care of your soul this day"
And that's when his mother shouted
-"Wake up or you'll be late to school!"
With sleep the child gets up, as usual and prepares to go to school; Once he was ready, he went to the kitchen to have breakfast, there they were, mom preparing lunch and dad in the dining room, drinking his coffee and reading the newspaper's policy section, as he did every morning.
Up to here all normal, except for the fact that his grandmother was not there, that every day she received him in the kitchen with hugs and pampering, something that did not make Ricky much fun because he was already a little man, even so he loved to his grandmother, then ask:
-"where is the grandmother?
To which her mother replied:
-"your grandmother feels a little sick and is still lying down, but do not worry, son, she will get well.
Then Ricky finished his breakfast quickly to not be late to school, even when he lived only two streets, said goodbye to mom and dad, and said dad:
-"hey champion, it's drizzling, carry the umbrella,"
He did and He left for school.
On the way I thought, how weird that dream, we all have strange dreams, but there are dreams, that touch us deeper, dreams that we do not forget just when we wake up as it almost always happens; Ricky separated those thoughts from his mind and continued to get to school once there, he noticed that he had forgotten his science book at home, it was common for this to happen to Ricky, he always left quickly not to be late to school even when he lived two streets; As it was important to have his science book because it would be evaluated that day, Ricky decided to go home to look for it, ran to go back soon and close to get home, the drizzle that fell began to get stronger, strong gusts of wind they beat the trees, although this was fabulous for Ricky, he adored the rain and the cloudy days, until that day ... only until that day .
Finally he get home and entering the porch it started to rain even stronger, a strong storm settled on the city, and as was the custom, when it rained this way, electricity failed; Ricky entered, put aside his umbrella and noticed a shocking silence, although Ricky did not fear the rain, the silence or the darkness, until that day.
Dad and Mom had already left for work because the family car was not in the garage. Ricky saw a burner in the kitchen lit, a half-eaten coffee, still warm and a piece of bread in the middle. eating, and he thought, it was probably the grandmother who forgot this burner on the way to her fourth step in her grandmother's room, he did not think to bother her because mama told her that she was broken and that she should rest, but she saw the door and the window of her room open, through the window the rain came freely and an infernal cold unusual at that time of the year, he entered and closed the window only to realize that the grandmother was not in his room, he began to call her:
- Grandmother!!
Throughout the house that was in the dark, this never responded, nor appeared, although if I hear steps from the kitchen, or so he thought, although it could be only the wind hitting the furniture, surprised and thinking that the grandmother he left with his parents, Ricky took his science book and prepared to leave the house, although it was still raining hard, for him, this was even nice, until that day.
Already on the porch of the house and while he was putting the key to the door, he heard a deafening and sharp noise, like a pig, followed by a frightful and demonic voice that said:
-"In the fog there was nothing"
And then heard a thud followed by total silence, an intense shiver ran through Ricky's body, trembling, he began to call his grandmother from outside the house, without getting any response, unable to believe what he had heard, Ricky tries to open the door and when As soon as he turned the knob, the wind blew hard and opened the door completely.
Darkness was everything he saw inside the house, for a moment, reign in silence, but moments later he heard again that sound of wounded pig and the horrible voice that said:
-"there was nothing in the fog"
Ricky ran, terrified in the rain, and heard the door close behind him, falling on the floor his science book, ran as fast as he could and came drenched and shaking to school.
upon entering, his mother was waiting him; she was dismayed, and ask him:
- What happened to you where you were son?
And Ricky broke down in tears and only asked his mother:
- Where is the grandmother?
And she answers:
- When you left home, the grandmother suffered a nervous breakdown, began to scream and say incoherencies, then fainted, your father and I took her to the hospital emergency, but the fog was very thick and we could not arrive soon, your grandmother suffered a heart attack and died.
At that moment the mother broke down in tears, both embraced and cried.
Ricky did not tell his mother about what he saw in the house that day, so as not to make her feel worse because of the loss of her grandmother.
During the funeral, Ricky asks his mother:
Mom, what things did grandmother say before she died?
And the mother said:I do not want to remember that now, son.
And Ricky says:
Please mom, I want to know.
The mother lowers her head, and with her eyes lost in the ground she said:
- She said many things that I could not understand, only in the end I understood what she was saying, she named your name several times after she just said "It was because of you that it was coming, it was because of you that it was coming and
“in the fog there was nothing".
