i-Talent | My Tips and Techniques on How to Draw Using Charcoal Pencil | My Fan-Art Entry

in #italent6 years ago

Hello everyone! It's been awhile since I last posted an artwork here on Steemit. (Well, I ran out of art materials, Lol.) But, I am back on track now and I tend to create more artworks in the future. So, here we go.

I saw this i-Talent Contest of @ivan.atman, and I've decided to join in. For me joining a contest is a good way for me to try harder and create a much more beautiful art. Well, I like the challenge, so here is my entry.

My Entry

I chose to create an artwork using charcoal pencil as my medium. I chose charcoal drawing because when I started learning, this is the medium that I first handled. So I wanted to practice more and more to be good at this.

My reference for this portrait drawing is Alycia Debnam-Carey as Lexa from the TV series The 100.

Lexa is my favorite character in the Series. She has been one of the most loved character in the series. I love how she has this angelic face but has a character of a warrior.
Anyway, I won't spoil too much information. For those who haven't watched it, I would suggest that you do, you might like it.

Process of my Artwork

Now, let me share to you guys the step by step process of my artwork. Well, I am not an expert, so I'm just gonna tell you how i do things my way.

Materials:

Brush
Fabriano Paper
Kneaded Eraser
Charcoal Pencil
Charcoal Powder
Mechanical Pencil

This is the charcoal pencil that I used on my artwork. I just bought this for $4 dollars. it consists of 6 pencil with 3 grades; soft, medium and hard. 2 pieces each grade. I'm gonna say that it's worth purchasing because based on my experience, the quality of the charcoal is very nice. And I love the outcome of my artwork.

Process

  1. I started with drawing the outline of the photo using mechanical pencil. Then followed by her eyes using soft charcoal pencil.
    b.png

  2. Her inks. I started with the medium charcoal pencil, then I used brush to blend it in circular motion. I dip the brush first in charcoal powder to give it a more firm blending. Then I added another layer using soft charcoal pencil for the dark areas.

  3. Her nose and lips, I used the same process I did with the inks, just I did not used the soft charcoal pencil on her nose because her skintone has to be lighter.

  4. Her skin. Again, medium charcoal pencil in a circular motion, then dip the brush to charcoal powder before blending. Don't forget to add shading by adding another layer. Then highlights using kneaded eraser.

  5. Hair. This is the tricky part for me, because I really find it hard doing the hair. This probably is my weakness.
I started with drawing or guiding the strands of her hair using the hard charcoal pencil, followed by medium charcoal pencil then blend it using a flat brush.
    i.png

  6. I used the soft and medium charcoal for her hair. Again, don't forget to dip the brush to charcoal powder for a soft and firm blending. And don't forget to use the kneaded eraser for the highlights.

7.Lastly, the darkest areas of the image which is her hair and collar. To achieve it, just use your darkest charcoal pencil which is the soft one. just fill in those area then blend it using your brush. (Just be careful with those powder because it's going to be messy. Make sure that you won't touch the other parts of your artwork because it might get ruined.)

And this is now the final output of my artwork. I also added some background to make it more alive.

I also took some close up photo.

Again, I am not an expert artist, these are just my own way on how I draw using charcoal. And of course, I am open to received critique, tips and techniques from you guys for me to improve more.

Thanks everyone! Specially to @ivan.atman, @curie and @gtg. Hope you liked my entry and thank you for initiating such a wonderful contest.

Amazing! I do not have the skills and talent for artwork so I am always amazed on how you folks make great artworks.

You did great with the step by step preeentation there. And the finished product? If only your material is not charcoal, it can be mistaken as an original photo. You were able to capture even the small details of the character's face. You are truly gifted with such piece.

Good luck on the contest! 😊

Oh thank you for those amazing and kind words @macoolette!
By the way, you can also start making your own artwork, everything starts with scratch. I started with scratch. I didn't even know that I am capable of doing such thing. But I tried. And here I am now. Just remember, "practice makes progress". 😉

You're welcome.

practice makes progress

I like that phrase! It is a better and more realistic phrase than what I used to hear, "practice makes perfect." I hope I can really make time for art drawing. Let's see... 😊

What a great charcoal rendition here @aboutart! I had a friend back in Vancouver who played a part in this series, so it's pretty cool seeing you do this here :) Thanks for sharing your talent!!

Thank you @lynncoyle 😊 Actually I just found out about this contest, if I've found out about this sooner, I would've joined then. ☺

You're welcome @aboutart! Better late than never I guess 😅

By the way, who is your friend who played a part in the series? Is he/she one of the 100?

His name is Eddie Williams, but I don't think he was one of the 100 @aboutart. I'm going to have to ask him that now 😎

Still that's pretty cool playing a part in the series 😀

It is very cool @aboutart! I know his character died off in the first season, but he was brought back as someone else and stayed there. I'll have to find out now myself because I'm curious!

Oh my God! I didn't expect to received an upvote from @curie! Thank you so much!! 😀

It always feel great to come across amazing art pieces, and this sure did it for me. I loved the detailed process, its gonna go a long way in helping someone out.

She sure is a mixture of two personalities (going by her looks). Angelic yet tough on the inside. An Angelic warrior. I really should watch that series.

Woah, an "Angelic Warrior". That sounds pretty good. I should've used that as my title heheh. Anyway, thank you for recognizing my artwork. I think that you should watch it. 😉

Hahah, that would have been cool!

Its my pleasure...
Yeah, I will make sure to..

The resemblence of your artwork to the actual photo is uncanny. Great work. I love seeing these step by step creation of artworks not only because one sees how an artist brings his thoughts to reality but also because one can end up learning on how to create something, if one has interest. You have walked us through how you sketched parts you found difficult and a lot of artists can learn from that. Anyhow, the final output is brilliant, really liked it.

Thank you @karamyog! I really hope that other people, specially those who wants to start drawing, will find my ways easy and maybe follow my step by step process. I really think that one must not let their limitations be on their way. Rather, use it to try harder and make progress. :)

Well said @aboutart. I am sure, people can learn a lot from you and your posts. You're doing everyone a favour.

Thank you @karamyog. I really hope others will find my way helpful and easy.

Wow the resemblance is amazing! You did a very great job here.. It looks just like the picture .. great job!

Great drawing! I don't use charcoal but I am always impressed with those who are good with it. I prefer graphite, though.

And I have a similar post, and you might want to check it out. It's a graphite portrait of a girl I was seeing last year. 🙂

I also handled graphite pencil when I was learning. I only used 2B, 6B and 8B pencils.

Great Lexa likeness! I really enjoyed seeing you brush around that charcoal dust, I have never seen any one drawing with dust! c;

Thank you for sharing your technique with us, Steem on!

The 100 is a great series!

You're welcome @ecoinstant. And thank you too for appreciating my artwork 😊
