The island, known as Gunkanjima (Island of War Ships) is one of 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki region, Japan. In 1890, Mitsubishi company bought the island in order to get coal from the seabed around the island. In 1916, large concrete was built around the island to protect workers from hurricanes.
The population of the island swelled in 1959. To the extent that Gunkanjima recorded the world's densest populated population ever with 835 prang per hectare for the whole island.
When coal is replaced by kerosene, coal mines begin to close. In 1974, Mitsubishi officially announced the closure of the mine and emptyed the Gunkanjima island. Hashima Island is now a favorite place for people who want to experience haunted tours.
