*iPhone 8 and 8 plus
"This is a huge step forward for iPhone," says Cook.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus has an all-glass body and comes in silver, space grey and a new gold colour. For those worried about cracking the front and back of the new device, Phil Schiller says the glass is reinforced with a steel and copper structure and is "the most durable ever in a smartphone".
The devices have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch retina displays and run on an A11 bionic chip. The iPhone 8 has a 12MP rear facing camera that is more powerful and can take in 80 per cent more light than the iPhone 7. The iPhone 8 Plus comes with a dual-lens 12MP camera with similar upgrades.
The new phones can now charge wirelessly by being placed on an inductive surface. It works with the Qi wireless standard, which Apple says it will help expand to public spaces such as airports and cafes.
It will work with third party wireless chargers such as those from Mophie and Belkin. Apple didn't announce its own wireless charger, meaning owners will probably have to buy the accessory separately.
The iPhone 8 comes in 64 GB and 256 GB and starts at $699. The 8 plus comes in the same variants and starts at $799. The devices will be available for order from September 15 and in stores from September 22. iOS 11 will be available from September 19.
iPhone 10:
Apple announced the iPhone X at its event on Tuesday. The phone is pronounced "iPhone 10."
The iPhone X is Apple's most high-end iPhone of the year. It offers a complete redesign from the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and was introduced along with iPhone 8 and 8 plus.
It features a new OLED display that's more colorful than the LCD screens Apple used in earlier iPhones. Apple is branding it the "Super Retina Display." The screen runs almost top to bottom and side to side, too, something Apple has never done before.
Apple said OLED displays come with trade-offs compared to its Retina Displays, but that its Super Retina Display supports HDR, offers the best color accuracy on the market and 3D Touch support.
There's no more home button. You swipe up from the bottom of the screen to return home. That gesture also allows a user to multitask - swipe up and pause, and you can multitask and switch between apps. Users can call up Siri by saying "Hey Siri" or by pressing the side button.
iOS 11 will feature, among other things, peer-to-peer Apple Pay and a redesigned Control Centre. The phone also comes equipped with wireless charging.
The iPhone X will be available in space gray and silver. FaceID is used to unlock the device, authenticate Apple Pay and create customisable animated emoji, called animoji (there are 12 new animojis to create personal messages). The 3D front-facing camera learns what users look like and is only inaccurate one in 1 million times. It will come in 64GB and 256GB with prices starting from $999. It will ship from November 3.
