An African use case for IOTA

in #iota7 years ago

In East Africa one of the most common transport method is Boda Boda or Motos. These are motorcycles that are used as hire taxis. The primary reason for this popularity is the fact that most inner roads are not very well maintained and mostly mud roads. This prevent traditional bus service to go to inner roads. Boda's usually go from main bus stops to inner living quarters, they do this over and over again several times a day and across the city.

The drivers belong to a class of citizens that has comparatively more disposable income and usually have smartphones. The people who use bodas also have comparatively more disposable income and can be associated with people who will be eligible for micro credits or other traditional financial credit instruments.

The bikes can be fitted with a internet connected devices or the drivers smartphone can utilised for this purpose.

The riders or customers also will have apps that will connect via bluetooth to the bikes device.

The village centers etc will have weather stations etc that have bluetooth or other local area connectivity.

As the bikes travel around the city it connects to and for an incentive buys various data available on the other devices. For example the rider (customer) can decide to share his movement data with other IOT's for an immediate incentive. The weather station owner can decide to sell his data to devices that pass near it.

The Bodas will buy data from various remote locations and riders etc to be sold to people looking for this data including microfinances for anonymized area based business activity information, or to agricultural companies to monitor weather at remote locations which do not have proper connectivity etc.

The Bodas will stand to gain profit for this service of aggregating the data.

Devices in remote locations will only give the Boda its wallet and a unique encrypted data, once the boda goes back to an area with connectivity it will transfer the incentive and the proof of incentive transfer can be used to get the key for decrypting the data.

Such a network can generate valuable insight for people trying to market into these segments, town planners, Aid agencies, NGO and other stake holders.
