Looking for the Truth

in #introduction7 years ago (edited)

Hi all, it's great to be joining the Steemit community and I'm really looking forward to both reviewing others' contributions and making contributions of my own.

Who am I? I am a 50ish year old British born male, currently (and hopefully permanently) living in County Mayo on the beautiful West coast of Ireland. I have a very diverse background that takes in all sorts of jobs from social work with children through to systems engineering and have both owned my own business and served as a director of a publically listed corporation. Currently I provide training, coaching and consultancy in strategic business decision making within the Technology sector as well as providing coaching and mentoring for individuals and start-up businesses. I live on my own (with my dog Zeus) in a small cottage on an acre of land in the middle of nowhere, and I divide my time between there and everywhere else in the world, with roughly 25 countries visited so far for my work on every continent except Antarctica (since penguins do not have much of a Technology requirement lol).

What brought me here? Probably the same as many others, which is the realisation that most media such as the major news companies and more well established social media sites are bought and owned by big corporate interests. It seems to me that these organisations have an agenda and are happy to push that agenda out to us branded as "the truth" whilst simultaneously doing all they can to either ridicule or even block any alternative views and opinions. There may be many who work for these companies who have not woken up and do not yet realise what the companies they work for are doing or why they are doing it, but it seems to me that there are also many that do know all too well and are happy or at least accepting to go along with it. And some of these have the audacity to describe themselves as "independent journalists" when in reality they are paid by their masters to dance to those masters' tunes.

So... if we cannot get to the truth through the "official" channels of the major news media and social media organisations, it seems to me that we need an alternative - and I am very much hoping that what I have found here on Steemit is a part of that alternative. An alternative that does not rely upon large pyramidical structures where all of the decisions (and by the way all of the profits) go to and come from the top, but instead provides a flat and level playing field where everyone has an equal and valid part to play in determining the value of any one contributor's contributions, and where censorship and bias is prevented because of the way in which the system is built.

In short... I look forward to learning from you all here and in making my own contributions as and when I can, and I will endeavour to make my contributions as useful and valuable to the Steemit community as I can!

My specific interests are:

  1. Global politics, big business and macro economics
  2. Corporate strategy and decision making
  3. Innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership
  4. Technology and its impact on society (for good and for bad)
  5. Alternative forms of government
  6. Sustainable living and self sufficiency
  7. Social and environmental concerns
  8. Seeking the truth and remaining open to new ideas
  9. Creative thinking and freedom of expression
  10. Nature, the countryside and a slower pace of life

If you share any of these interests then please do follow me and I'll be happy to reciprocate.

Hi @west-of-ireland, Steemit is a revolutionary platform in so many ways. The fact that it cannot be censored means there is freedom of speech like no media outlet we have ever seen in the past. It doesnt mean it cant be manipulated and that it doesnt have its issues, particularly at this early stage in its evolution but it is a game changer.

Welcome to Steemit.
