Faking Perfect - Where has my steam gone?

in #introduceyourself7 years ago

Unless someone is blowing steam I hear this is the place to be?

IMG_1779.JPG

The place to share a voice, get fresh new insights and opinions and generally build steam into areas that interest me and others- to add value ... no more location, location but collaboration, collaboration - perfect!

But talking about location ... here's what's behind my arrival 'The Shed' a new private venture to be set in the rolling hillside of Yorkshire, a self-help out reach post for mental health, healing and positive action. My labour of love.

IMG_1531.JPG

I'm a lady so no need to give my age ;-) but let's just say I have years to back up my thoughts, the Yorkshire blood to say it bluntly and backed up by my Sagittarius fire sign ... and go by the nickname DJ or Dr Zoe for those who feel better for it. I'm an ex-academic in organisational change, ex-IBMer, author in Self-help (and one naughty text under a ghost writer name) but most importantly single-mother of two grown-ups.

I've survived a tumour, a divorce and the recession - can I survive here?

I'd like to let off steam about the deep and meaningful; those thoughts, beliefs and values that drive our behaviour and impact our sense of self - what's mentally hidden and often emotionally shown. I'd love to gain the support, input and momentum of those who 'just know' and have value to add to a meaningful and highly sensitive subject; suicide among other issues and triggers that lead to it.

I think it's time we all asked ourselves 'am I faking perfect?'

IMG_1770.JPG

Are we always showing a 'brave face?'

With today's incredible technology and power to communicate there has never been a time like this to feel like you're just not cutting it or not good enough - that you can't get through or live another day. That there is no light during a period of darkness and exhausted by no end in sight.

There's never been more ever present pressure to be 'perfect' and there's certainly never been a time like this when so many are 'faking' it for all to see or hide behind.

New groups are shooting up everywhere. New companies are emerging, all in a bid to fight the rise in suicide and battle the mental health challenges that do not discriminate age, gender, status or even sexual orientation ... we are all susceptible and there is lots more we can do. This isn't new, but it does appear to be growing and the new social addictions to presenting the perfect life, body or being is helping to fuel it.

I'd love to; with your support - continue to raise awareness of what it is, how to spot it and how we can all help.

I really hope I've got this whole #introduceyourself right - if not, please remember no one is Feking Perfect :-)

you made it. So good to see you here. And a brilliant first post. The shed is awesome. Enjoy your steemit journey, as I know you will Dr Zoe.

Well thank you I really appreciate that, it took a little time - but worth full consideration before just diving in. I'm sure its a great community to share, learn and build with.

Hey, welcome to the steemit. I hope you will find what you are looking for :) See ya around.

Hey thanks, now that I've just discovered a bug in steemit that thinks my post failed (so it's on twice) when clearly it hasn't - cause you replied ;-) I appreciate your warm welcome!!

See you around @omeratagun

Welcome to Steemit from Canada 👍

Hey to Canada - not visited in far too long. A great big Yorkshire HELLO to you, looking forward to getting steemed with you!

Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by anarcotech from the Minnow Support Project. It's a completely public and open space to all members of the Steemit community who voluntarily choose to be there.

I feel honoured - thank you, still learning all these new big words and how to share my magic with others sparkles, I'm sure this will help!

Welcome! This community is so wonderful, and I'd venture to guess you'll love it. Having spent somewhere in the neighborhood of three years in a deep, dark depression, not knowing I was in it until I realized I was hoping to die nearly every single day, I'm grateful for your willingness to speak up and advocate and assist healing. Welcome, welcome.

Thank you so much @solarsupermama for such a wonderful welcome but not least for being so open. It's always an honour and makes me smile when someone can speak up for themselves - it's the hardest step.

It really fascinates me how depression can be spotted so much easier from the outside by others, yet so ignored by so many, whilst at the same time remain so unknown and undetected to those suffering.

We just don't know what we don't know - the dark has no logic and struggles to find the light to shine on it!

I really look forward to getting steamed with you!

I look forward to it too! I found being open was the biggest key to bringing healing. Since then I've been really vocal about bringing mental health issues into the light. When I realized what was happening, I discussed it with my son, who was 18 at the time and dealing with his own depression. I told him I wasn't sure how long I'd been there, maybe since the birth of my last child. He immediately affirmed that was the case and told me he'd noticed a huge change at that point. I just didn't see it.

Hi @zoedj, I think the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi) is a perfect philosophy that teaches us to embrace imperfection and transience. Unfortunately it doesn't mean that their society is immune from having to keep up pretenses and hide their emotions. I think mental + physical exercises need to be balanced for better health and well-being, and your project is a good step in the right direction :)

Hello @plushzilla what wonderful words dai suzi desu (sorry my Japanese is very rusty these days!) You speak great wisdom. I know how challenging it is some days for some to even contemplate the effort of getting up and showered, never mind a refreshing walk in the great outdoors - but every step counts doesn't it and we can all help to guide others to those steps.

I very much look forward to sharing wisdom with you, thank you!

My Japanese isn't that great but they do have lots of wondering concepts. When did you go and learn Japanese? I am still learning bits and pieces but hoping that meeting lots of people from around the world will inspire/motive me to get back to learning/studying more.

あなたのポストも大好きです。

Welcome, I look forward to more posts and conversations. What are your thoughts about how to get more people participating in writing?

Hello @shanibeer thank you and yours too.

You ask a great question and I don't want to risk misinterpreting it - do you mean here on this wonderful site on on the topic of mental health, healing and positive action?

If it's the former, I shared only a few days ago how I felt this channel could be seen as quite a leap from the very spoon fed 'other side' of traditional social media. I'll continue these comments and my personal view if this is what you refer to - please do let me know. I would be keen to hear your thoughts too.

Hi there Zoe, I was thinking about how to get people writing generally, on here or anywhere. Another friend posted that he thought people should write, because the act of writing was self expressive and beneficial. I was thinking about the reasns that people don't write and I was interested in your ideas.
