Hi Everyone.
I'm Ethan and this is my first post on Steemit. Although I use FaceBook daily, I resent FB as a company and I'm not a great fan of the Zuck for a long long list of reasons. I purposely do not own any shares in FB stock because I want to believe something can and should come along and destroy/disrupt FB. My hope is that Steemit will be that disruption. I am not very well versed in the world of crypto currency or steemit, and I have a lot to learn. I hope my Steemit peers can help educate me. So I pose two questions to you:
Are the creators of Steemit actually trying to disrupt FB? Is their goal to unseat Mark Zuckerberg to become the world's dominant social media platform?
Assuming the answer to #1 is "yes," is it even possible for Steemit to accomplish this goal?
I'm interested to hear what you have to say on this.
In order to disrupt FB and become the "dominant" social media platform it would have to either play by the same corporate rules as Facebook does (doubtful, if it's even possible) or it would have to provide something better than what FB offers. I tend towards the latter. In my view, they don't have to be hell-bent on destroying Facebook. If their platform is less profit-driven and empowers the user in new ways, people will naturally gravitate towards it. Of course, that depends on people's ability to see what it offers, which still has a lot of people scratching their heads.
No I don't think steem will over take FB unfortunately, if it continues it's current path. Steem encourages longer blog like posts where as FB mostly consist of quick snippets, usually many a day. I think this is where the average FB user would find that STEEM requires too much attention to detail and professionalism to be a real disrupter.
However in saying all that, I still think STEEM will be hugely successful. But it's kinda like comparing Bitcoin to Ethereum. They both have their place and attempt to resolve different problems and both can be successful.
Very thoughtful reply, thanks! I think your intuition is right.
It could over take it once the there are enough different platforms over the steem blockchain... They alread are and i see no reason why not building one similar to facebook... Steemit.com as a site must transform it self in order to grow...
I share your opinion. Numerous services for video sharing, tweets, bloging, etc. based on steemit reward platform will be available in future. This will challenge google, facebook and other enterprises sitting on the market.
Sure of course. Anything is possible.
Exactly, Facebook is a platform to connect people we know of while STEEM is currently based on growing public attention and using it to earn money. Its very different to facebook, we normally talk here to people we don't really know of.
I completely agree with this
I've been trying to get facebook users to use other social media sites for years. I haven't even been able to get one single person I know on facebook to use Google+, and everyone already has a Google account. I'm still trying. I'm brand new to this site, and maybe, just maybe, I can get people to make accounts here since cryptocurrency is a hot topic and everyone wants to make money. Unfortunitely I don't envision facebook losing popularity anytime soon. People are slow.
Well, I came over to Steemit because I don't like Facebook at all. It's all memes and shitposts and pictures by some 'friends', friends that I either barely know, met only once and then never spoke again and so on. I only really use the Messenger part of Facebook and I know quite a lot of people that do the same. My problem with trying to convince people to come over to Steemit is that they do not believe that they could actually make some money here, or don't understand how or where this money is coming from.
I literally never heard of Google+ lol.
Thank you @thegreatwent for your thoughtful questions. My answer if the Steemit Creators are intentionally trying to disrupt facebook...is No. Why should they? Steemit.com is just one application on the Steemit Blockchain and aims to provide a platform and pay service for content creators and curators. That is a totally different business model and also experimental in technology because of its Blockchain nature. I think what could happen by accident is that the Steemit Business Model (To get paid for content) will eventually disrupt all other social media sites out there. That is the Revolution!!!
Good answer! Very interesting insight!
yes I hope so too @thegreatwent For me too, I agree with you about Facebook and I am not a fan, but hard to escape right now. I can see steemit growing very very quickly in popularity. I just joined I am still trying to get my bearings on this platform, but one thing is for sure. I can feel the excitement and buzz on this platform
It definitely has a good community of enthusiastic followers.
pls am following you pls follow me back
hello friend I am also a new user of esteemit and I have the experience with my son and his friends, they are very happy with esteemit, he has not stopped using facebook but I think now he spends most of his time in esteemit since it generates income and the best thing about this community for me is not their income but the quality of their people
I think steemit and fb are two total different things. As more people with low education still use facebook but only people who know how blockchain work can play better in steemit.
i think Steemit is a different approach to SM than facebook. You were supposed to use fb to connect with ur friends, not followers. There's a project called Sphere.social and they do try to take down Facebook. thanks!
@thegreatwent thanks for placing this very interesting question. I read most of the feedback from people and my opinion is that the steem blockchain has a lot more potential than facebook and totally different visions in mind.
The steem blockchain has the vision of its creator @dan (very well explained by @teamsteem in his welcome to steemit post) that in summary it is achieving freedom for us, empowering people, returning the power to the hands of us the people, and give the control back to us. No intermediaries in the middle. And this is actually really happening. Lots of people around the world are able to make a living with steemit nowadays, something it was not possible were they live. Lots of people that are unbanked that is a great percentage of population in the world, have actual access to steem and are able to make a living with a few little of steem today. And this is just the top part of the iceberg.
Steemit and the steem blockchain has great developments already operating, this developments like @utopian-io are disrupting the way insdustries work. For instance, @utopian-io is a disruption in the way open source projects are funded. It has a created a completely new markert/ new economy, were contributors are payed for their contributions (developments, ideas, suggestions, bugs on coding, tutorials, and many other things).
There are many other developments in process. And there is a huge thing that will be released soon I believe, which is SMTs (Smart Media Tokens), were any person on the steem blockchain will be able to make an ICO and create its own crypto (similar to what the ethereum ecosystem does, were new ICOs are generated, but in the steem blockchain, and with the super power and speed and deliverabilities of the steem blockchain which is the far with more transactions nowadays and still not using 1% of its capacity. While ethereum, bitcoin and others use all its capacity with less transfer going on on their networks.)
There are so many things happening on steem that I believe it can reach $30 in the next few months, and who knows if $100 by the end of the year. And it has a super potential to go much further.
On the steem blockchain, a platform like steemit can be created, more to the similarity of facebook, but with the power of the steem blockchain, and the power for people to earn, and with that single detail, people for sure will start trying it and moving to this platform.
In addition to all these things, steem has the power of being a bank itself, and not only giving what banks does, but much more, such as speed of light 3 second transactions, no fees, it gives interest to hold steem power, and so many things that it has the power to do, and is doing.
I don't know if you heard from me before, or if you got by chance to one of my latest posts/chapters.
In addition to posting several ideas to help improve the steemit front-end in order to increase the percentage of retains of users, and to help capture the attention of more users, I also finished creating the 11 chapters/posts full steemit guide to help new members and new visitors on steemit, to understand as much as possible of the steem blockchain and steemit, and thus help them make their way on the platform.

well said, upvoted.
Thanks for your support @extrospect .
I am glad to find an alternative to facebook - their rules are becoming more and more draconian!
Seriously true.
FB is going to lose all of it's interesting people to us, so it will become truly the internet's hairy anus. "Suckerberg" will be forced to join Steemit and will be humiliated daily via downvotes and poignant, extremely personal insults. If this doesn't happen by 2019, I'll sell my entire collection of miniature RVs.
hahahhhaahhah
I agree ☝🏼 i see all the incredible insightful people migrating to Steemit once they learn a little about it
Welcome to Steemit! The only way to disrupt FB is to keep using Steemit!
Amen 🙏🏻
I hope so! Facebook is evil!
I don't think so

Hey Ethan, I see you don’t have a Steemit Profile Picture I made a post to make it simply to do and win Steem/SBD. Here
thanks.
Great to see you posting here bro! Cant wait to see your success here on Steemit!
Thank you. But please, feel free to answer the two questions I pose in my post.
The Steem blockchain will not replace just Facebook. It will surpass and crush all other forms of social media including twitter Instagram and snap-chat. Soon it will begin to take over other industry such as marketplaces. Thanks for the Reply Ethan.
I agree with you sir @extrospect
very nice post... i like it...
thank for sharing with us..
@extrospect Happy Holidays! Definitely @thegreatwent will make his way here. His posts are very interesting and the questions he is asking are of great interest for many people.
I went and checked your blog and see you have been here for several months, and have been trying to pull more people here to the platform, and same as me, and many steemians it is a bit difficult. I also see you have been trying to bring people in crypto from very early several years ago, you are a really early adopter. Its interesting to find you here in this way, in @thegreatwent post.
I don't know if you heard from me before, or if you got by chance to one of my latest posts/chapters.

The only main thing I would like to be conveyed in someway is related to my first post. Death; and while the post refers specifically to Bitcoin, the same is true for any Crypto, including Steem. Cheers @gold84
https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@extrospect/bitcoin-and-death
Also, seeing as you have some weigh around here @gold84 and are trying to increase retention, consider the following. This is not an isolated circumstance by any means and really discourages people that I have brought in as well.
@thegreatwent brought in a person to steem, @elainey and she produced amazing (!) original content, but was immediately attacked by Cheetah. Not that you maintain that bot, but if you are in talks, something should be sorted out.

Personally I don't think something will "overtake" Facebook and become the dominant social platform - the interesting question is not "what will replace facebook", but more "what is the next evolution of social media". Platforms like Steemit lets it's users share in the value creation it generates - this is a very powerful signal, and just might be a clue to what we can expect to see more of.
Ooooo I like that idea. Yes. I just hope FB gets lazy and misses that next evolution.
Steemit is facebook for smart people. Congratulations if you made it here.
Even the shitposters spammers are smart, at least they are trying to make something usefull with their life, since they came for the rewards.
This is not to Dis anyone that uses Facebook, but when you spend sometime there, you can see the quantity of garbage those people share.
OH SNAP DUDE! Way to get a heckofastart Welcome aboard! Im new also and I will say YES and YES to both of your questions! I have fallen in love with 😍 Cryptos and some how stumbled into Steemit and it’s wonderful! Like you I loathe fakebook or fascistbook but all my friends and families use it ugh 😑 it annoys me with the ads and selling our information it’s like a Vampire and we need fakebook to die die die! Any way God Bless you I will follow you I think you are a keeper
Thanks jakeduck. Here's a question for you: does Steem ever plan to sell advertising and disperse the revenue to its content producers? I know how you feel about ads (and I'm really against the idea of selling people's info), but wouldn't it give you a warm fuzzy feeling if the content producers on FB were actually given a little kick back from the advertising revenue? I for one, would be in favor of this on Steem, but that's just me. What do you think?
awww man I do not know the answer to this I have not been here long enough...but judging from the flavor of this platform I do not see the need for advertising. Bad thing about fakebook is they know what we are browsing for so they target ads specifically at what we have previously looked at. Talk about lack of privacy geeezzzzz man.
humm! this sounds aloud. well my view is that every business has it objectives if appropriated rightly. it is achieved if the objective satisfies the oriented services. FB has it's own and it has shown for it. Steemit has theirs too strategical positioned too that I see in nearest days to come accomplish it objective. minding that both shares social media network.
good job thanks
I have been done with FB for so long, just have to stop going there. I hate scrolling through the feed full of egos, hate and just lame stuff. I hope the majority of those type people stay there in that energy vortex.
I would love it if this is the social platform for those who are doing more then sharing pics of their dinner or creating negative conversations just to do so. Keep em separate.
I love this place to much already.
RESPECT
I believe that Steemit is a viable alternative to Facebook but unfortunately people are set in their ways and want instant gratification. Steemit is great but requires more effort and thought be put into posts and you have to actually create content instead of just sharing others memes or pictures. Eventually I see Facebook accepting some type of cryptocurrency as payment for some of their apps and games or for their sponsored posts.
You really think FB could shift over to a cryptocurrency system? I feel like it would be so significant a change, that they would be too worried about breaking their already proven system. It's like when Coke changed their formula and it spent the next decade trying to undo that decision. Thoughts?
I don't think that FB would shift over completely to a cryptocurrency system but I do believe that they will start accepting crypto as an alternative to USD.

I'm not exactly sure just yet; I think a lot of people would love that. But perhaps it's more like the alternative for those who are tired of Facebook and want better quality content which they definitely find here.
Anyway - welcome to the platform! Looks like you got a nice start there! Feel free to swing by and check out some of my videos (I'm a singer-songwriter). xx, Kay
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Awesome. All the best in 2018!
It certainly has a chance to compete. Good post :)
I am Elon Musk and I believe yes!
Hi Elon!!! Good luck with the Falcon Heavy Launch!! Is that going to be coming up in January? Also, is it possible to do a re-usable 2nd stage for the Falcon 9?
LOL you are not Elon Musk.
I’m not sure about FB, since at least for me FB allows me to keep in touch with friends and family. I think Reddit is a more direct competitor to Steemit. Just as streaming shows eventually took over my cable TV viewing habits (took about 20 years), I think there will be a time when I steemit over reddit.
Hmmm yes seems that Steemit feels a lot more like Reddit than FB. I guess FB is just its own animal perhaps. How does Reddit generate revenue btw?

I'll help you get up to speed.
As for your questions.
I joined Steemit from the beginning and have watched it unfold. Blockchain tech is revolutionary. Steemit has big plans, could disrupt the likes of FB someday. Steemit also has many other plans like allowing tokens to be originating from their platform.
It's definitely possible. I was there at the beginning of FB, when just 8 schools used the service. So, I've also witnessed Facebook's birth and growth.
I'm a futurist. I follow world thought leaders like Peter Diamandis and Ray Kurzweil, co founders of Singularity University.
All I'm suggesting is that your questions are valid.
My personal opinion at this moment in time is that Facebook is here for now and will likely remain relevant as long as they disrupt themselves and adapt.
If you really want to know me and connect, this goes to anyone out there, then checkout my blog here on Steemit and shoot me an email.
We are going places!!!
Welcome to Steemit man!
What does Ray Kurzweil think about cryptocurrency in general? I seem to recall him poo-pooing BTC, but I may be mistaken.
It will happen naturally. Steemit is not a competitor to FB. It's the next level. Buy some steem my friend and start grinding. Welcome.
I did buy a little steemit just for fun. But do you feel it can go up in value substantially? Is there a cap on how many Steemit coins can be in existence? Does it have scarcity like BTC?
It will go up substantially and it has limited supply. I'm not the tecnical guy. You should read the white paper and check out some Jerry Banfields posts. You can fin him on a hot or trending page.
Thanks. I'll check it out. I'm not a technical guy either. I wonder if, at any point, the value of the upvotes will be tied to advertising revenue generated by Steemit as a whole?
Welcome Ethan
thanks
There's many usability improvements needed for Steemit to overthrow Facebook. If Steemit looked like Facebook for the users, it would overthrow Facebook! As Steemit develops more, it's only a matter of time before Facebook is forgotten by Steemit.
I'm with you on this one. I love the idea of Steemit and I like the community, but man it really needs a make-over. FB isn't perfect either, but Steemit has a ways to go on UX.
I really think it could have a chance at giving Instagram and Twitter a run for their money! I predict main time instagram and YouTube famous people will be attracted by the money involved and switch over. Just my two cents.
welcome to the community
I think they are differebt beasts.
Steemit has a better chance of replacing reddit. However of a true social network was built on the steem block chain, then that could.
Www.facesteemer.com or www.steemingbook.com
It is hard to say that the Steemit can destroy/disrupt FB. But there is decline in the use of FB. People are migrating to other social networking sites.
Steemit have attracted many people in very less time may be due to its monetary system but it is great because I belief People always invest their energy from where they can get some return. And I hope the way the Steemit is moving definately it will be in the list of top social networking sites.
Long Live Steemit! Down with Facebookism!
You are discussing the very right topic,Facebook will not fall down from the steemit. But the price of the crypto currency may come down further.
Hello Ethan.
Even though I am very new here, I would say that I don't think steemit and its creators care about competing with FB as they are completely different as concepts and business models.
FB is free but receives a lot of money from the paid ads thousands of people are using, not to mention the collection of data from its users and selling them to companies.
On the other hand you have steemit which is free too but instead it pays the content writers the way it does. And the most important is that the model of steemit does not support trash content, with that meaning the quality will be different and better.
What I think will happened is that many people - like myself - who don't like FB even though we use it, will be attracted from steemit's concept and spend more time here rather there.
And I have the feeling that those coming to steemit will be the mature, serious and deep thinking individuals that don't see themselves fitting into FB anymore.
hello @thegreatwent nice to meet you
iam newcomer please upvote and teach me, thank's :)
Personally I think Steem has potential in itself as a blog site (with added crypto mechanism which makes it more attractive). Won't be as big a social media platform as FB, but could become the no.1 blogging site.
Great question
Here is what I feel about Steemit
Its far from being a social platform compared facebook. The way facebook is structured from the outset its tailored to create Relationship first before business.
When facebook was introduced the business aspect of it was placed on silence so to speak. Your post get quickly noticed by friends. Everything was smooth.
The developer wanted to approach it from a relationship perspective because through relationship you get people to be committed and loyal to your course.
It took some years before facebook turned its platform to a Relationship-Business and Because people are already Loyal and committed to using the platform it was easy to convert them to business leads. Now to get people see your post you will have to pay a fee for it.
How about steemit?
To me its more of a blog than social platform but its slightly social.
If Steemit wants to kick facebook out they would have to add Relationship building to this platform like facebook and create an advertising community where people meet to share business ideas outside steemit
What do you think about this?
What do you mean by an "advertising community?" Explain that please.
A group where people meet and exchange business Ideas...share links for signup without being flagged.
Facebook has groups of interest with different niche. You can meet various people who share the same business ideas with you and discuss business with them. You can add them up as friends and even put a call thru to them. You can video chat .....to build relationship then business follows
You can own your group and add people of same interest with you. And build a great audience.
Guess you know what I meant to say.
we will find out this year for sure
https://steemit.com/life/@asulu.saint/axle-forward-and-master-saint-s-looking-into-the-future-january-2018
I think this platform has no goal that involves Facebook
Facebook is losing interest of those that require to be intellectually stimuate (we are a dying breed), and it is clear as day that facebook is being run into the ground with ads, bots, spam, and just pure iggnorance. I have pretty much stopped using it, using it now to promote steemit.
My prediction is that facebook will self implode or split-apart, and hopefully alternative sites such as steemit begin to collect those that have defected. With a quality content focus, support and preservation of the steemit ecosystem, promotion of only quality content, including being paid to contribute quality content and actions, this could attractive many quality people running from the toxic monster facebook has become.
It will compete with the Tumblrs of the blogging industry. A place to earn income doing what they already do, with out all those ads. It can do very well, but FB is way to big with a valuation of over 500 billion dollars. Now a buy out is very possible. I don't know of a blogging company they currently own in the social media space.
Welcome to the coolest community on the web right now, haha. Anyways, I'd say no. This doesn't seem like something focused on something that meek... Facebook did what no one else did at the time, now it's time for something better. This seems birthed behind the support of crypto and the block chain technology. Just a humble opinion though. Cheers mate, and happy steeming.
