Well I've just landed here! Wish me luck :)

Good evening everyone!

I thought that I'd take a minute to introduce myself and give a little indication about some of the things I'll be writing about in the comings weeks and months.

I'm a longtime IT professional, have held positions in development, systems administration, and network engineering in various capacities over the years. For a quick synopsis you can always finger me:

Anyway, I'm glad to be here. I started setting up my Hive account back in November but other priorities got in the way for a while, and now I've come back to Ecency to make begin my foray into the ecosystem.

I intend to write about emerging technology, mostly FOSS based self-hosted platforms and tools that can improve the lives of people, including HowTo's and cookbook style tutorials, and the latest news.

I'm also an advocate for privacy rights, and as such, I'll cover privacy respecting social networks and communications systems that protect your intellectual property, allowing you to retain control and ownership of your personal information, data, and identity.

Well, that's about it for the moment, I hope to provide valuable insight into securing your online presence and show you how you can control your own your own destiny, safe from the data mining industry that spends billions tracking, quantifying, packaging, and placing you onto the shelf as inventory to be sold.

And remember, you can haz #Cheezburgerz! 🍔

And another thanks for the warmest of welcomes, with pointers to resources I can avail myself of. I followed you and joined or subscribed to the resource you provided.

I'm not sure how the whole communities feature works just yet, I've looked through a few but there's what looks to be another type of construct too. I've noticed that there are either people or communities that I haven't been able to follow, but I'll certainly learn how to navigate around as I go.

Bienvenido a Hive, espero te diviertas mucho y logres tus sueños en ésta hermosa plataforma, saludos!

Welcome to Hive!
So nice to hear you’re an IT professional. Perhaps I can learn a lot from you.

Enjoy Hive!

Hey @tallship! This is @indayclara from the @ocd team. Congratulations and welcome to Hive!

We love to read more of your stories so make sure to share them in our amazing Communities! You can also check out the Communities Incubation Program.

By the way, since content on the Hive platform is monetized, using other people’s ideas or images could be considered as an offense and which is also viewed in a serious light on the blockchain. Here is a useful collection of resources about how plagiarism and abuse is viewed and handled on Hive.

If you have questions, you can hop into Discord server and we'll gladly answer your questions.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome. Everyone's been really welcoming, honestly. I've been just browsing through to see the timbre of what people share here and I must say it is encouraging as much as it is pleasant.

Everyone on the blockchain is given a certain amount of "RESOURCE CREDITS" (RC) that can be "spent" in publishing posts, writing comments, etc. Everything we do requires a few RC to accomplish, similar to "mana" or "gas" on other blockchains. We are given RC depending on how much HIVE POWER (HP) we have staked. If you don't have much HP, you will use all of your RC quickly. RC recharges at a rate of 20% each day.

You have been given a temporary delegation ("loan") of HP to provide you with a greater allotment of RC, courtesy of @theterminal's RC-assist project. We ask that you:

• do not plagiarize (steal or 'spin' others' work)
• remain active
• comment/upvote others' posts to build your network
• PowerUp rewards to grow your account, do not 'cash-out' to an exchange

You may check your RC any time at https://hiveblocks.com/@tallship
The best of luck to you on Hive! 🙂

Thank you so much!

I just responded to a post you made a little while ago and I think I probably have what I need to begin.

Thank you, and I will not squander, nor will I cash out to an exchange. I do think, however, I should look on KuCoin to see if I can pick up Hive there, and then look into staking, since this seems to be my next action to become a full-fledged member of the community that helps others.

kindest regards,

Welcome aboard! I only dabble in Debian, but I run a Raspberry Pi 4 on the Raspberry Pi OS and an old laptop on Lubuntu. I'll delegate some Hive Power while you get started!

Thanks @jacobtothe :)

That rPi running Pi OS is basically Debian through and through, and it's good to know your laptop is still a daily driver long after the Microsoft OS it probably used to run for you was EOLed.

Certainly, connotations in the past that Linux was only fit for older hardware is no longer is no longer a generalization, and certainly, it's the first choice for many applications nowadays, including smartphones upon which Android is built.

I look forward to sharing content about tech moving forward and glad to know there is such a diverse community here embracing so many different things. I really had no idea about the vibrant Hive community, hearing only about it's rapid development and adoption, which fortunately, was enough for me to look deeper into.

I appreciate your confidence and support and will endeavor to offer some articles that can make a difference in the self-hosting aspects not just for people like you and I, but see if I can't deliver an imperative on the significance of FOSS and how easy it really is for everday people to harness the benefit it promises in our lives.
