The ultimate goal is for our class to earn Steem to invest in Bitcoin and then further invest in different altcoins based on market trends. My name is Brandon Wright; I am the teacher of the class and moderator of the course page. As the 2017 Hernando County Teacher of the Year and recipient of the Governor's Shine Award for Excellence in Education, I look for every opportunity to use authentic learning experiences to help drive student learning. This project evolved from a class discussion about recent news regarding the skyrocketing value of Bitcoin. What better way to understand why this happens then to dive into the community and explore it first hand?! We look forward to the support of the Steemit community as we begin our journey into this growing medium of exchange!

However, I'm curious to hear why you think other altcoins and bitcoins are more lucrative to hold than STEEM? Are you familiar with the upcoming Smart Media Tokens? STEEM will be a platform on which numerous new applications will be built. It's hard to want to support a project if you know their ultimate goal is to dump their rewards and pump other project.
Awesome idea! Glad to see some of the younger crowd getting involved with Steem/Steemit. I hope you’re able to learn a lot about Steem. It’s a great blockchain...much better than that Bitcoin nonsense.

@shsibecon - Hey Brandon! I really love this idea.
I wanted to pass along a quick suggestion. Be sure to set your rewards to 50%/50% for now. The reason is that a payment with half Steem Power and half SBD will be of more value than just a 100% Steem Power payout.
Take the SDB in your wallet. Then use the Market to sell the SBD for Steem. Then use Steem power and power up.
Thank you for the suggestion! Can you point me in the direction of a post or literature about how to differentiate the finer points between SBD, Steem, and Steem Power? That would be really helpful in trying to determine our class strategy in the future!

Just my personal preference. Save up SBD and then wait for a SBD pump and use block trades to sell them for bitcoin or whatever crypto currency you prefer that the platform supports. During this latest pump, it went up to 12 bucks so the 30 SBD I earned on this platform I actually sold for 12 times that amount and it got deposited right into my bitcoin wallet.

This is awesome!! I wish they did something like this when I was in highschool. I'm currently a college freshman and at university cryptocurrency is really popular. When I tried to explain it to teachers in highschool though no one understood or cared haha. You seem like an awesome teacher. Congrats on the award and good luck with your project!
