Since I was born and raised here it's normal to me and doesn't feel strange at all. The extra cost of living to have many of our goods shipped in and the fact that it's expensive to travel anywhere is basically part of life. I'm aware of the distance, but it doesn't bother me much.

As for a percentage of how many people surf I'm not sure I can give you an accurate number on that, haha. It is quite common though and there are a lot of people who surf, many who aren't even from Hawaii and just came here for that reason.
