Hello from the farm!

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemit community, I'm glad to be here!

Up until 2 years ago I was a full time web designer and developer. Then as I was an avid gardener I became interested in growing my own food and started volunteering on various farms to learn what it takes to grow our food organically. At first I thought I was getting into growing veggies for profit but as I learned much more about Permaculture, herbalism and nutrition I became inspired to live more in tune with nature and to grow more good food than I need so that I can share it with others.

I am saving seeds from my travels to plant in a future garden, hopefully not too far in the future. Seeds are like natures crypto. They are decentralized, abundantly available, diverse without monopoly. They are very resilient. Seeds can turn into beauty, deliciousness, homes, tools. They can remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

I am intrigued by the strength and wisdom in the seeds that can grow to huge trees that give us food year after year. I dream of a day that our city streets are lined with nut and fruit trees free for everyone to enjoy and appreciate.

Herbs and trees can give us abundant nutrition, to the point where your body smiles and says "thank you, may I have more of this life giving energy"?

Nature nourishes us heart, mind, body and soul. She provides what we need to flourish.

Thank you for a beautiful community where I am humbled to introduce myself and proud to learn from others.

Welcome @sagescrub, I'm really looking forward to following your blog!

Woohoo!

Welcome to Steemit @sagescrub! Glad to see another permaculturist. I'm hoping we can get permaculture into the trending topics one day!

Likewise! We are all playing our part to recognize the earth for its beauty and abundance :)

Welcome to Steemit @sagescrub. I also love gardening, nature & also herbs, grow a little herb garden outside my kitchen door. Awesome being able to pick fresh herbs when one needs it for cooking or healing! Look forward to seeing more of your posts :)

Yay! It's great to find a new community with fellow gardeners :)

Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Gardening is life!! So glad to connect to this great group of enthusiasts with abondance mindset. It's awesome. And, i am learning a lot about blogging. Your style @sagescrub is really comfortable to navigate and explore. Great work! I will venture through 😁🌱❤ ....carry on!

You are very kind @yogajill :) Glad to meet you and sharing in this amazing community of gardeners, homesteaders, permaculturalists, nature lovers and in general really amazing people :)

welcome to steemit! what i have learned about seeds is that are like a treasure at this moment. nowadays and as the years pass more and more seeds out there are of mass production with many problems like only one usage. still if you search you can find good ones with good traits that will last forever ( meaning you grow the herbs-food they give you great flavor and other seeds too, thats natures way!)

well said!

Welcome o Steemit! We have a healthy gardening and homestead community here. In know you will enjoy it here. Upvoted, following. resteemed.

I love the energy of gratitude you share in your post. Thank you!

Thank you as well for reciprocating :)

Welcome! This is a great place to meet lots of different types of people who bring lots of different points of view. Sounds like you have some interesting thoughts to offer and I look forward to hearing more of them!

Thank you @mwoodall!

Nice intro @sagescrub, talking about seeds, have you heard of a Pascal Poot? he grows tomatoes almost without water!

Thank you @senorcoconut! Dry farming is really interesting to me, did you happen to have any experience with these seeds? I would be curious to know your results.

My ant had bought some of Pascal's seeds in france.
She grew a small patch of tomatoes with the same technique for while but eventually I think she couldn't break out of the old watering habbit completely. Thew grew very well and they were super delicious.

My dad let his seedlings go, neglected them untill tomatoes dropped and rotted a little. I collected what I could and will start growing next season!6

Interesting, I will have to read up on it and perhaps give it a try.

Yea super interesting. Dig deep into this guy's work (most of it is in french, but than again I haven't had to look for the english written articles too much).

He grows something like 400 different kinds of tomatoes, and veggies in the same waterless fashion! again his name is Pascal Poot. I can't wait to get started either

Hey @senorcoconut. I finally did some reading on the dry farmed tomatoes. Wow! This answered a lot of questions for me about dry farming. I am so grateful that you shared this with me!

Thanks for that. I think everyone should know about this. It's pretty awesome. My aunt and dad had bought seeds from this guy and I collected some seeds from their crops.... If all goes well I should have some hearty tomatoes. I'll report on it.

I'm glad you got to look into it. See you!

Welcome to steemit - there's plenty of people into plants and homesteading here - you'll find plenty of ocmmunity :) Kate

Thank you Kate! I'm glad to be here with this awesome community :)

welcome you sound like a sensible grounded person and it is nice to meet you .. whereever you are is beautiful

it is beautiful! anywhere I find myself in nature is beautiful :) i'll post more pictures later

cool I am looking forward to it

@sagescrub Welcome to Steemit! Great photos, can't wait to see what your garden looks like from the seeds you've been collecting.

Thanks @tahorfarm, I can't wait to see what it looks like either lol! In the meantime I'll have to find some time to dig up photos of my old garden and some of the farms and gardens I've visited along the way.

You've definitely moved beyond simply gardening, to more of a state of being. Good on you.

I must admit one of the best things about growing my own food, is watching the seeds evolve into a full, 'working' plant is almost magical. Beans that you can almost sit and watch grow, they develop so fast! Like Jack's beanstalk, lol.

I look forward to further posts as you continue your quest for greater harmony with Mother Nature. :)

Thank you @ravenruis :) I do love watching beans climb as much as much as I love watching seeds spread.

Homesteaders Online

Thanks Torico! I hadn't heard of those yet so I will definitely be checking them out. I appreciate your sharing :)

Welcome to steemit ;) Nice shift of interests - However if you still are into software developement, you must check out the open source rewarding community @utopian-io!
Btw., resteemed you via @welcoming where you will meet other promising new steemians ;)
Greets!

Thanks @theaustrianguy ! I am more into web design now than development. As my interests shifted so did my interest in designing websites for sustainable farm, food, herbalism, etc related businesses. Do you know any good community for design or does utopian-io cover that as well? Thanks for the warm welcome :)

welcome to steemit and cant wait to see more post!

Welcome! I’m a fellow permaculturist and share a similar background. Gave you a follow! Make sure to checkout @steemithomestead to connect with other gardeners and permaculturists.

I love gardening too ... but nothing of course like on your scale! #lifegoals

Hello :) Your photos are great! Welcome to Steemit!

I love how you compare seeds to crypto and then talk about sustainability and the future. I felt the overlap too. I became interested and invested in cryptos half a year ago and around the same time, I figured out I wanted to live an off-grid, self sustaining (as much as possible) life.

Nice story and beautiful pictures, by the way. Where are you located?

I am also in the process of figuring a permanent spot partially or fully off grid. I am in Washington, USA now possibly Oregon next year. I have been wwoofing on farms the last 2 years and contributed to 13+ farms while traveling and learning. Thanks for the compliments

Welcome to Steemit!

Welcome to Steemlandia!

Hi @sagescrub! Welcome to Steem! We're glad to have you here!

I am a Steem curator and have started a new series "The Daily 5" where I pick five new Steemians to share with my followers that they should know about. I have selected you as one of my five for today. Your post has been featured in my post you can find here: The Daily 5.

Unlike some of the bots and follow 4 follow spammers you will find in the Introduction tag, my work is 100% human and without any required response from you. While I invite you to come check out the post and interact in the comments, nothing further is required but that you enjoy your time here on Steem!

Have a great day! Looking forward to seeing more of you on the platform!!

Thank you @mikepm74 I am honored!! I am glad to be part of this community :)

Happy to have you! Keep up the good work! The community needs all the good folks we can get!

Welcome to steemit, @sagescrub!

Such beautiful picture you got here!

My profile is @flashfiction and i would like to present you some links i found really useful when i first signed up here. They will make you start with the right foot on Steemit!

These links will all open on the SAME TAB (Yeah, i know...), so i recommend opening them with "right click->open in a new tab".

LinkCheckDescription
Growing FastTopYou HAVE to register here, if you want to build an audience FAST. It's a free service for boosting exposure, upvotes and followers. You just have to click on "login". Have your key at hand (That awfully long number you got when you signed up on Steemit). The tutorials are easy to follow.
All about steem coinsTopThere are three coins of use on Steemit, and understanding them is critical for your success. This is a short explaining video, the very best i've found.
MarkdownTopEven if you can use some basic HTML on your posts, the correct way to format them is NOT HTML. You use a marking ruleset called, yeah, "Markdown". Have this as a complete reference.
PostingMediumThe top activities on this site are posting, upvoting and commenting. This is an excellent tutorial about making your posts look great. Don't miss it!
UpvotingMediumYeah, you tought upvoting was just a matter of machine-gunning your clicks and make easy bucks. Nah. It is actually a little more complicated than that. All you need to know is here.
Better interfaceMediumLet's face it: The interface on Steemit is pretty basic. "Busy" is an alternate interface you can use, more polished and easy to navigate. Both of them can be used simultaneously. Again, you just have to login.
Using BotsMediumThere are a lot of things to learn about this platform, and understanding bots is one of the most important. They are little different services you can access for a fee. I found this tutorial extremely useful.
Trevon JamesMediumI know, i know... there are lots and lots of GREAT steemians here for picking one to recommend, but i just love Trevon's style. He explains EVERYTHING you need to know about Steemit (and crypto) in a funny, accesible way. Check him out.
@flashfictionAwesomeWell, duh. My profile! ;) I write short fiction and tutorials on creative writing. I would be honored if you'd follow me.

Anything i cand help you with, i'm at your service!

See you around!

Hey @flashfiction, how kind of you to share these links! I will check them out, I am sure they will prove to be quite useful :)

Welcome to Steemit. We share pretty similar backgrounds. I quit a design job in pursuit of a sustainable life. I still feel in transition, but I know I'm on the right track. Followed you for updates on this beautiful path you're on.

That's awesome and thanks for reaching out! What was the final straw for you and what have you been up to since venturing out on your new path? I have been happily unemployed for 2+ years now and I still feel like I am in transition as well, but now I hope my life never stops transitioning :)

Well, it really came down to not having any passion for what I do, especially since design is a field I've always loved. That aside the company had several problems of its own. Having seen the scope of what good design can do, I couldn't allow myself to continue producing mediocre uninspired work. I've been trying to use my ethics and beliefs in my own design. It's not the most financially sustainable, as they're commission based client projects rather than a regular income. It's enough to support me though, and I finally have work that I'm proud of. I've also been planning on moving away from the city to live off grid. This past year has gone into setting that up, but it's a long term project that will continuously evolve. People like you give me confidence that it's not only possible, but extremely lucrative.

I hope we can all inspire each other, right now we are the minority. Hopefully we pave the way for future generations to have the same options as us without being as clueless as we are :) I am learning not to think in absolutes, although it seems possible that based on where I was, thinking in absolutes was necessary for me to conclude a change in my life's course toward a more idealistic destination. Now idealism is fading away to reality and my reality is what I make of it. On a good day :) I am glad you are following your passion! You are inspiring me also!

Hello @sagescrub . Am glad you are here on steemit. Hope you have a lovely time here on steemit. I upvoted you,its small, but just a sign of my good will.
