Hello everyone. To start off I am a CPA licensed in the state of Florida. I have had my practice for 12 years. However I am not your typical CPA. In fact I don't even see myself as a CPA. To me it is a means to an end. I used to hate accounting I remember as a business undergrad when I completed accounting 2, I said to myself thats it no more accounting. But life happens and years later after floundering with a worthless degree I decided that I had to go back to school. I wanted to become a physicians assistant so I went thru all of those sciences classes like chemistry, microbiology, physics, etc. I finally after about 2-3 years, because I was working and studying at the same time, I applied to the only medical school for physicians assistants in my area but to my dismay I was 1 applicant out of 700 and the school only accepted 70 students. To make it worse they preferred the students that were matriculated in that school already. It is a private school and it was hard enough financially just to pay the tuition for a community college. I submitted a strong application. 3.5 GPA, I worked in a medical center for the aged as a front desk person for 2 years part time but I did not even get a call back. Because the school accepted students only once a year, I decided to switch gears and head off to business school and go into a field a swore off and become a CPA. It was a difficult transition for me because I really enjoyed medicine but I had to take my medicine and move on with my life.
Ok enough with that. The one thing I really like about working as a tax accountant is that I make most of my revenue by april 15! So after the grueling tax season I have alot of time available. This allows me to check out other things. To go back a little when I was working as an accountant for a government agency I traveled to Costa Rica on christmas vacation. The country is very beautiful, the beaches, the rain forest, mountains, wild life, but also the females too. When I went there I met a lovely woman we started going out with the 5 remaining days I had left. So when I had to leave I told her that we can stay in touch and in a few months I can visit again. Well I did arrive in about 6 months but after spending three days in her home I felt like I was on lock down and decided to leave. She understood because she noticed that my disposition changed. Long story a little shorter I met another lovely woman and that one I married. But if it was not for the first one I would not returned so quickly. Thats the way life is.
Because I had a long distance relationship with the woman I was going to marry my spanish became fluent. I would visit Costa Rica four times a year and stay about 2 weeks+ each time. With my accounting back ground I started to notice business opportunities. Long story a little shorter, I opened a business and did OK. But it was alot of work and the return on my efforts was not up to par. But I did see the potential in Costa Rica. I then opened up another business and with the business sense that I accrued with my accounting practice, it started to take off plus I did not have to kill myself doing hard labor for a little money. Later I used the same template to open another business. Why reinvent the wheel.
Currently I spend over half the year in Costa Rica. I enjoy my life. I enjoy the culture. There is a sense of community there which lacks, for me, in the states. In retrospect, maybe it was best that I did not get into medical school. I think there is a lesson in that. Just keep your head down and your options open. Many times we think we know but really we don't. There is more I can write but...
