Venezuela dawns late after a night of brutal repression in several areas of Caracas and other cities. The national strike begins today its second day, and will extend until tomorrow at 6 in the morning.

The repressive forces acted until almost dawn in Palo Verde, La Candelaria, El Valle, El Paraíso and La Urbina in Caracas, as well as in several areas of Zulia, Lara and Mérida.

During the day, clashes between demonstrators and security forces left at least two dead and 171 detainees, according to the Venezuelan Prosecutor's Office and Criminal Forum.

The victims, a 30-year-old man and a 16-year-old teenager, died in Merida and Caracas, respectively, bringing to 102 the dead that have left the wave of opposition protests that have shaken the Caribbean nation for almost four months .

The mayor of Mérida, Carlos Garcia, blamed police officers for the death of whoever identified as Rafael Vergara, a victim of "repression of the organs of the dictatorship," he wrote on Twitter, without specifying whether he was shot as reported by neighbors in the area.

The mayor of Mexico denounced shortly before death that the neighbors of that and two other areas of the state were "besieged and repressed by government organs and government groups" of President Nicolás Maduro.

Prosecutor 104 of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas confirmed the death of the teenager in a demonstration in the populous Petare neighborhood, according to the Twitter account of the Public Ministry.

Violent clashes also hit other Venezuelan cities, often triggered by police efforts to clear roads cut by citizens who erected barricades.

The opposition said the strike was seconded by 92%, which was discarded by Maduro.

The call to strike "has been defeated" by the "working class" that has obtained "a total victory today against the attempt of an indefinite strike," he said during an act with his sympathizers transmitted in a mandatory radio and television chain.

"The people did not stop the unemployed, people went to the streets to work, to live, to do, to build. While they want to stop, the people want peace, "he added.

For the opposition, however, the strike was a success.

"In total we obtained a 92% participation in all the national territory", said in the name of the coalition of opposition parties Mesa of the Democratic Unit (MUD) the deputy Freddy Guevara.

According to the deputy, the general strike had the highest compliance rate in the transport sector, followed by oil, commercial and public sector, with minimum percentages above 80%.

With at least 50 detainees today, the Human Rights Forum has accounted for more than 4,500 arrests since the current wave of protests began in April.

The opposition hopes with this protest to stop the election on Sunday Constituent, which in its view would open the doors to the consolidation of "dictatorship" of Maduro.

The pro-government movement is pushing for this process - which the opposition is trying to prevent by further actions of civil disobedience - in order to "strengthen the revolution" and underpin the "communal state".

The start of the strike coincided with the penultimate day of the election campaign for the election of the Constituent Assembly, which also maintains official acts and celebrations throughout the country.

The opposition protest will remain on Thursday and will coincide with the last chavismo campaign, for which Maduro asked his supporters across the country to travel to Caracas and be part of what he called will be "the mother of the constituent campaign closures ".

Venezuelans are summoned by Maduro to the polls to elect the more than 500 members of a Constituent Assembly also rejected by several nations and international bodies.

A demand to suspend Sunday's election came today from the Organization of American States (OAS), which issued a joint statement signed by thirteen countries and the secretary general of the continental instance, Luis Almagro.

The process of the Constituent Assembly "would imply the definitive dismantling of democratic institutions," he warned.

In addition, the US Treasury Department Announced today a new round of sanctions affecting senior government officials and military bodies, and warned that there will be more punishment if the call to the Constituent Assembly goes ahead.

Maduro decorated the sanctioned ones, among them Elías Jaua, president of the Presidential Commission for the Constituent and ex-president of Venezuela, and Tibisay Lucena, president of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

The Treasury also sanctioned the Minister of the Interior, Néstor Reverol; To the commander of the Army, Jesus Suárez
